Children’s clothing, teen fashions, sports and work wear, elegant prom dresses, and vintage clothing will all be displayed at the Feb. 27 Community Fashion Show, a fundraiser for the Newcomerstown Library. The event will take place in the Christ United Methodist Church, 648 Oak Street, Newcomerstown. “We are working as a small community to make this happen,” said Tammy Shinabery, event organizer. “We hope that the surrounding areas we patronize will come into town to enjoy our fashion show. We are working to save our library and our children’s programs here.” Shinabery initially discovered the library through the eyes of her granddaughter. “I was very impressed with the library when I moved here and brought my granddaughter to children’s programs. We have a unique children’s program, that includes two very gentle dogs that the children can read to.” The dogs, named Murphy and Marley, are Labrador-bloodhound mixes, and are a favorite with area youngsters. “Our library also includes a live iguana and fish. It is truly a library that supports imagination, along with children and teen programs. We have one program where we have a core group of 20 teens that participate every week in the Manga Club. It gives them a safe haven, a place to belong. They get to open up, talk, and discuss things, all while they are involved in activities.” Shinabery explained that the Newcomerstown Library still owes money on its building, and has suffered due to last year’s Ohio state budget cuts. All funds from the fashion show, sponsored by the Newcomerstown Library Back on Track committee, will go to help keep the library’s services intact. The show will begin at 2 p.m., and last for approximately 2 hours, including an intermission. Children’s fashions will be modeled first, with friendly Mr. Caterpillar accompanying any of the young models that have last-minute stage fright. Young tap dancers from Studio 3 will entertain, and will be joined by Murphy and Marley. Next will be models wearing vintage fashions, dating all the way back to the 1800s. Additional teen, sports, adult, and prom fashions will also be exhibited. Shinabery stated that approximately 60 volunteer models will be participating. “We tell our teen models that they are helping the community by participating. It’s nice to see them getting excited about this.” She received assistance from area merchants in putting the fashion show together. “I went to the stores, and they were very nice about being willing to participate and donate their fashions,” said Shinabery. Stores loaning clothing include Rainbow Party Rental, Paul Ne Fashions, Walmart children’s department, and Deb’s, Elder Beerman, Maurices, CJ Banks, and Christopher Banks, as well as Bridal Universe at Unusual Junction. Organizers are hoping to fill as many of the available 650 seats as possible for the show. Shinabery believes that not only Newcomerstown, but also surrounding communities will be eager to attend to support the library. She clearly is one of the library’s biggest fans. “People are always surprised to find such a fantastic library in such a small town.” Tickets are $5 each, with children six and under admitted free. In Newcomerstown, tickets can be purchased at the public library, Jude’s Hair Care, T’s Kut and Kurl, Systems Three Hair Salon, and at Hairport. In New Philadelphia, they can be found at Paul Ne consignment boutique, and at New Towne Mall at Maurices, CJ Banks, and Christopher Bank. In Dover, tickets can be purchased at Rainbow Party Rentals.
