Darrin Troyer loves old cars. His love for cars led to collecting them after graduating from high school in the 80s. Wanting to interact with other collectors, he joined the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) in 1993. His passion for antique cars grew through the years, and wanting to share his enthusiasm for them, an idea was born. The name for this hatchling idea came from Troyer’s hometown hidden in a valley in Holmes County: Trail. Thus, the Follow the Trail Car Show was born. Five years ago, in its inaugural year, the show was sponsored by Troyer’s Trail Bologna. All proceeds went back to the AACA. As the years went on and the car show grew, Troyer knew he wanted to make a difference. This summer marks the fifth year the show will be put on, will be the first that a portion of the proceeds will go to a charity. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America will be the first charity on the list, as the club has lost many members to the disease in the past several years. Troyer has a list of causes in the next few years that he’s earmarked a portion of proceeds to go to. The cost for registration is $8. Troyer said the goal is to get more than 100 cars set up to view at the site in the wooded Trail bottom, which is located on SR 515. This is a judged event, and only cars 1995 and older can be entered. The judging will be done by the AACA’s national judges. Categories include Best of Show, Troyer’s Choice, and Best Hot Rod, plus many more. The show will be held Saturday, August 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., with awards being announced at 4. The event features more than just a car show. There will be a flea market on premises, along with entertainment provided by DJ Ryan. Also included will be games for kids, trivia, and prizes will be given. Food, homemade Amish baked goods, and crafts round out the array of fun festivities. The first 75 cars will receive dash plaques and Troyer is pleased with the way the show is growing. There are more sponsors this year than ever. Troyer’s Trail Bologna, Bunker Hill Cheese, Winesburg Marathon, Shisler’s Cheese, and Frosty Twins have jumped on the Follow the Trail V Car Show bandwagon. To find out more, call is 330-760-2200.
