Great Decisions lecture series has 3 speakers and a film screening
E.J. Dionne will present “One Nation After Trump.”
“Resurgent Nationalism and Borderless Problems” is the topic of the Great Decisions lecture series, an annual joint venture between the College of Wooster and the local Wooster community. The 2018 edition will feature four well-regarded speakers, each presenting at Gault Recital Hall inside Scheide Music Center at 525 E. University St.
On Thursday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m., the series will kick off with a visit from Laura Galante, a cybersecurity expert, founder of Galante Strategies and senior fellow of the Atlantic Council.
She will present “Cybersecurity in the Age of Connectivity.” Considered a leading voice on information operations and intelligence analysis, Galante and her company assist governments, corporations and private citizens in analyzing and responding to cyber and information threats.
She previously served as the director of global intelligence at FireEye Inc., a cybersecurity company, where her teams investigated network activity, profiled and attributed advanced cyber threats. Galante’s work also has included directing intelligence publications such as “APT28: A Window into Russia’s State Cyber Espionage,” “Red Line Drawn: China Recalculates Its Use of Cyber Espionage” and “Hacking the Street? FIN4 Likely Playing the Market.”
On Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m., Angela Maria Kelley will examine “Immigration Policy and Politics Under the Trump Administration: What’s Happened and What’s Happening Next?”
Kelley is a senior strategic advisor on immigration for the Open Society Foundations and Open Society Policy Center, where her work focuses on the policies and politics of immigration and integration issues at the state and federal level.
Kelley was the executive director of the Center for American Progress Action Fund and a senior vice president at the Center for American Progress. In 2014 she served as a White House advisor on immigration executive actions. A daughter of South American immigrants, Kelley began her career as a legal services attorney for low-income immigrants.
On Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m., E.J. Dionne, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and syndicated columnist for the WashingtonPost, will present “One Nation After Trump.” He is a co-author of “One Nation After Trump: A Guide for the Perplexed, the Disillusioned, the Desperate and the Not-Yet Deported.”
A nationally known commentator on politics, Dionne regularly appears on National Public Radio and MSNBC among other media outlets and in addition to his column. He has written a number of award-winning books and was elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Dionne also is a professor at Georgetown University.
On Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m., there will be a screening of “Chasing Coral,” a 2017 film that follows a team of divers photographers and scientists set out on a thrilling adventure to document the disappearance of the world’s coral reefs. It premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
The screening will be followed on Wednesday, Feb. 28 with a luncheon lecture by Larissa Rhodes, the producer of the film and director of creative development at Exposure Labs, an organization dedicated to crafting powerful stories that help shape an understanding of the world. Her presentation, taking place at Kittredge Dining Hall at 535 E. Wayne Ave. at 11:45 a.m., is titled “From Chasing Coral to Chasing Conversations.”
Tickets for the luncheon are $13.50 while all other events are free and open to the public.
Great Decisions is a renowned lecture series, established in 1981, that examines international affairs and foreign policy by bringing in experts from a variety of backgrounds.
