Every September communities across the nation come together to recognize Recovery Month, a time to celebrate the resilience of individuals who overcame substance abuse and mental health challenges.

Recovery Month began in 1998 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to increase awareness of the millions of Americans who have a substance-use disorder.

The Wayne County commissioners recognized Recovery Month recently during a regular session.

“Ohio has a significant population struggling with addiction, with estimates suggesting that hundreds of thousands of Ohio residents face this challenge,” commissioner Jonathan Hofstetter said. “Wayne County recognizes the importance of supporting individuals and families affected by addiction and applauds the tireless efforts of the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Wayne and Holmes Counties, the Counseling Center of Wayne and Holmes Counties, Anazao Community Partners, Catholic Charities, OneEighty, National Alliance on Mental Illness Wayne and Holmes Counties, and other dedicated organizations and community stakeholders that provide vital recovery services and support.”

In Ohio and across the nation, the role of the community in supporting recovery cannot be overstated. Communities serve as the backbone of recovery efforts, providing essential services and a sense of belonging and understanding that is crucial for those on the path to healing.

In addition to state-sponsored resources, numerous local organizations and nonprofits play a crucial role in supporting recovery efforts. These include recovery housing options, peer support groups and vocational training programs that empower individuals to rebuild their lives.

“Recovery Month serves as a powerful reminder that, with support and access to quality treatment, recovery from addiction is possible,” Hofstetter said. “These essential services offer hope, healing and pathways to long-term recovery, addressing both substance-use disorders and mental health conditions, empowering individuals to rebuild their lives.”
