Karams to hold open house and fundraiser
Karams Martial Arts and Sports Training invites the community to an open house to celebrate the grand opening of their new facility at 1127 Front St. SW (formerly Players Choice next to The Skate Place) at New Philadelphia on May 14 from 1-5 p.m. Guests will have the opportunity to participate in free martial arts classes, utilize the refurbished batting cages and view demonstrations. Refreshments will be served.
The open house will include a fundraiser for Dress-a-Child, a local organization that has been providing much needed clothing to the children of Tuscarawas County. Since 1970, the organization has been run by volunteers and assists qualifying families with the purchase of new school clothes for kids in grades K-12.
The fundraiser will include a raffle for prizes. Tickets are $5 each with four chances to win. Students of Karams will be selling tickets the week before the open house. Tickets can also be purchased the day of the event or by calling 330-339-9127.
Prizes have been donated by local businesses and families who are a part of the Karams Martial Arts program. The prizes include gift certificates and items from Schoenbrunn Inn, Texas Road House, Williams Furniture, Tastefully Simple, Wendys, Dr. Lee Russell Sayner and others. The drawing for prizes will be at 4:30 p.m.
Karams Martial Arts and Sports Training is a second generation school and has been a part of the Tuscarawas Valley for more than 35 years. The late Master H.J. Karam started teaching Tae Kwon Do in his garage before moving to their Dover location. As the business has grown it has become necessary for the school to relocate to a larger facility. We have been blessed with so many volunteers that helped with the move on April 30, said Audra Karam.
Thousands have learned Tae Kwon Do and the traditional ways of the martial art form as students at the school. The tradition of teaching the ancient ways has continued with Master Karams sons, Matt and Adam Karam. Matts wife, Audra, and their children, Bryce, Beckett, Harrison and Brooke, participate in the day-to-day operations of the school. Adams wife, Lisa, also assists in belt test judging.
The new location will allow Karams to expand into other areas of sports and family activities. We have refurbished all of the equipment that was purchased with the building as well as rebuilding batting cages, said Matt Karam. We anticipate working with local baseball and softball teams to allow them a controlled environment in which they can practice their skills anytime, he said. The facility will also be available for private parties and other special occasions. Our goal is to offer a family environment for constructive sports development in many different fields. Audra Karam said, We are also expanding to offer sports training in the new facility to help athletes work on speed, agility, quickness, reaction, and power through our Elite Athlete Program.
Karams Martial Arts and Sports Training offers age appropriate classes for students of all skill levels. Tae Kwon Do, Cardio Kick, a womens only cardio and resistance training class and self defense classes are taught by the Karams and their staff. We are focused on helping students excel in life as well as the martial arts. Karams differs in that we dont just talk about your child learning focus, discipline and respect; we teach it on purpose in everything we do. We are the only school in the area with a child life and development specialist on staff assuring that the program meets the highest standards. The students in our program train in an environment that fosters growth physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. Another critical element to our program is that it is age-specific so children are able to learn at their appropriate stage of development. We are unwilling to compromise the quality of our program and strive to be the best, said Audra Karam.
