Lowery celebrated for lifelong dedication to community
On a day that began like any other, Joe Lowery Jr. was met with a surprise, one that would bring together family and friends to honor a life dedicated to service and love. The celebration took place Feb. 23 at Tuscora Park Pavilion, marking 60 years of Lowery’s journey as a pillar of strength in the New Philadelphia and greater Tuscarawas County community.
Surrounded by loved ones, Lowery, a father, grandfather, church leader, sports coach and UPS employee, was showered with appreciation for his contributions.
“It was great to see everyone come together,” Lowery said.
Lowery grew up in New Philadelphia in a neighborhood filled with children from varying backgrounds who bonded over their shared experiences.
“We all went to school together,” he said. “The good thing about that time was that we were all different races, and we all got along.”
Those formative years instilled in him a sense of unity that would follow him throughout his life.
As a devoted family man, Lowery has learned raising a family requires dedication and consistency.
“As a parent, it’s better to have no rules at all instead of rules you don’t enforce. Consistency is one of the most important things in life,” he said.
His family-centered approach is mirrored in his role at church, where he serves as the Sunday school superintendent and a trustee, further solidifying his commitment to nurturing both faith and community.
Lowery has spent more than 30 years at UPS.
“Every day might not be spectacular, but I love my job, and it helps you to keep a positive attitude,” he said.
Throughout his life Lowery’s belief in the importance of faith has been influenced by his grandparents. “When my grandparents passed, it struck me that they always lived by faith and not by sight,” he said. “They taught me to live by faith and not by sight.”
For Lowery, community is a commitment to providing support and love, despite its occasional challenges.
“Community can be messy at times, but that’s where the work is done,” he said.
Through checking in on nursing home residents, coordinating family reunions and cheering on local youth sports teams, Lowery has shaped the lives of many in his community, leaving a lasting imprint.
The celebration included tributes and stories shared by those whose lives he has touched. Guests indulged in a feast of soul food, perused picture boards showcasing Lowery’s life and marveled at a themed cake commemorating the occasion. Yet the highlight of the event was the look of joy and surprise on Lowery’s face when he walked through the doors.
As the evening unfolded, it became evident Lowery is celebrated by his family and also treasured by the entire New Philadelphia and Tuscarawas County communities. His commitment to consistency in life is an inspiration to everyone who has had the privilege of knowing him.
