In past years the Scouts of Troop 358 have handcrafted picnic tables to sell at their annual hog roast auction, but this year the troop has upped the ante and come up with three main packages among their plethora of auction items that are available to bid on now.

The Scouting experience is all about helping young people build character, leadership, teamwork, and ways to develop their self-esteem and confidence.

In order to enhance that objective, the members of Millersburg Scouts BSA Troop 358 will bring some food and a chance to purchase some neat items at auction to the public, and as has been the case in the past several years, there will be an online silent auction.

One big change in the silent auction is the troop will offer an expanded list of items including three packages that should entice people to not only stop by to pick up some food, but also invest in the chance of winning.

The annual Scouts BSA Troop 358 hog roast and silent auction will be May 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Tope Printing parking lot, 1056 S. Washington St., Millersburg. The meal will feature pulled pork sandwiches, topped baked potatoes, baked beans, desserts and drinks.

For the auction items, the first is a multiple-round golf package bringing several area golf courses into play including golf passes with cart at The Legends Golf Course in Massillon, Fire Ridge Golf Course in Millersburg, Black Diamond Golf Course in Millersburg and Round Lake Golf Course in Loudonville. All are for two players, except The Legends, which is for one player.

The second item of the big three is an upright chicken coop donated by Troop 358, and the third package is called Tour of Holmes County and will feature one night at the Wallhouse Hotel (in honor of Preston Phillips), a $20 gift card to Boyd & Wurthmann Restaurant, a dinner buffet with beverage for two at Mrs. Yoder’s Kitchen in Mt. Hope, a dinner for two with beverage and dessert at Der Dutchman Restaurant in Walnut Creek, a $15 gift card to Coblentz Chocolates, and a ticket voucher for two to attend a show at the Amish Country Theater.

“We really worked hard to expand our silent auction and make it more attractive than ever,” Troop 358 leader Jeff Miller said.

In addition to the big three packages, there will be plenty of other items including a Stihl BGA 45 battery-powered blower, a hardwood cutting board, plenty of additional dining gift cards, four tickets to an Akron Rubber Ducks home baseball game, pizza certificates, a 12-inch Lodge cast iron Boy Scout skillet and fire cook stand, a Scotties auto detailing, a one-hour massage at Active Chiropractic, collectible comic books, car wash coupons, oil changes at Southside Quick Lube, an Echo Weed Eater and more.

The auction runs through Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m., and those interested in seeing the entire list or placing bids can find the auction at www.troop358mbg.org/auction. Click Auction in the upper-right corner of the page.

In addition to bidding, the Scouts are still accepting donations of all types to help raise funds, and anyone who wishes to donate an item may do so on the auction page.

All of the proceeds are being set back for the upcoming 2025 Sea Base trip to Florida, where Scouts from all over the nation will come together for an excursion designed to offer an unparalleled opportunity for personal growth, learning the value of teamwork and experiencing adventure on a whole new level.

“We are gearing up for some really special activities this year including the trip to Florida,” Miller said.

He said last year the troop raised close to $8,000, and this year they are hoping to up that number to $10,000 to trim the cost for each Scout hoping to attend the Sea Base trip.

“I know that is a big number, and I know that this community takes pride in supporting opportunities that inspire the growth and character building of our young people,” Miller said. “It’s an exciting opportunity for Scouts, and we are eager to help raise funds that will help all of our families curtail some of the expenses. These trips are not cheap, but they are an incredible experience for the kids and for us as leaders because it helps bring us all closer together.”

He also said they have already given each Scout a payment plan for the trek, and knowing some families can’t afford the hefty price tag to attend, they don’t want that expense to deter Scouts from attending the event, which is why this auction and hog roast are so critical.

“The hog roast is always fun, and it’s a good chance for our Scouts to build leadership and organizational skills,” Miller said. “We hope everyone comes out for some food and please check out the auction page.”
