McMillan/Benden awards honor student athletes
Four elite student athletes participating in the 101st meeting between Wooster and Orrville were recognized for their accomplishments on and off the field.
At midfield at Red Rider Stadium in Orrville, just prior to kickoff, Woosters Brenner Lewis and Orrvilles Mason Monheim were named the McMillan Award recipients for 2011.
The McMillan Award has been presented annually since 1990 to the senior athlete from each team who has demonstrated not only outstanding athletic skills but also academic excellence and service to the community.
For the past 22 years this prestigious award has been presented in memory of the late Charles W. McMillan. A lifelong sports enthusiast and father of Wooster graduate and former Orrville coach Bill McMillan, Charles McMillan passed away July 27, 1990. The award was created to honor his memory.
The McMillan Award includes an engraved plaque and a $400 college scholarship sponsored by the McMillan family.
Members of the McMillan family were on hand at the game to make the presentations to Lewis and Monheim.
At the conclusion of the game, Woosters Devin Daugherty and Orrvilles Drew Brenner were named the Joseph R. Benden Jr. Player of the Game award winners for 2011.
The Benden Award is given in honor of Wooster High School graduate and player Joseph R. Benden Jr.
Benden was a 1984 graduate of Wooster High School who was killed in a tragic automobile accident just two years later in 1986. The award was created by the Wooster High School Student Council in his honor.
