Muddy Princess Run is good clean fun
An event for women of all ages and fitness levels, the Muddy Princess 5k obstacle mud run is coming to Lightning Raceway in Tippecanoe on Aug. 28. Sandra Loosen, CEO of Muddy Princess, said there is no timing and no competition. Instead, the focus is on fun and teamwork.
The event features 18-20 obstacles posing a variety of challenges. “We have walls to climb, we have obstacles where they need to crawl, we have balance obstacles and, obviously, a lot of mud,” Loosen said.
Additional obstacles include hills, wading pools, climbing frames and barrels.
There is no pressure to complete all of the obstacles, though, as participants are allowed to walk through any obstacles they feel are too much for them to handle. As the Muddy Princess website says, the emphasis is on having “a girls’ dirty day out.”
Everyone who completes the course, no matter how long it takes, receives a medal, a goodie bag, sunglasses and a paper crown.
Those wishing to participate are encouraged to preregister online, although event day sign-ups will be accepted if the event is not sold out. Participants are sent out in waves, and Loosen said preregistering helps assure a spot and the desired wave time.
According to Loosen, the first wave of participants will start at 9 a.m. with additional groups starting every 15 minutes until noon.
At press time standard ticket prices started at $59 and varied depending on the start time chosen. Loosen advised registering soon because the prices increase closer to the date of the event but will never exceed $79.
A $99 VIP ticket also is available for women who want to support the organization’s chosen charity partner, the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Spectators can hang out for free in the village hospitality area and cheer on their favorite princesses from start to finish. The village also will serve as a registration point where food and merchandise can be purchased.
“There is also a rinse station where participants can rinse off the mud a bit so they get a little bit clean before they get into their cars,” Loosen said.
Loosen said the run will take around 90 minutes to complete. “It’s only 3 miles, but a lot of ladies just walk it, or if they are in a team, they’re kind of waiting on each other,” she said. “They take their time since there’s no competition and no timing, so I think 90 minutes to two hours is a good average finish time.”
While the event welcomes women of all fitness levels, Loosen said participants should be in good health, generally speaking. “Everyone knows their own body best and what they’re able to do and what they’re not able to do,” she said.
Volunteers run for free
Women who volunteer at the event can run for free or have $40 donated to the charity of their choice. Loosen said volunteers are needed to help with registration, provide support as women attempt the obstacle challenges and perform other tasks. Volunteers need to be age 16 or older.
“We also give out a community service certificate for those who need the hours,” she said.
Little princesses welcome
Girls age 7-13 may participate in the event as long as they are accompanied by their mother or a guardian. Those age 14 and over do not need to be accompanied, but a parent or legal guardian will be required to sign a waiver.
