Orrville Public Library to present Salute to American Women luncheon
The Orrville Public Library Friends will hold their annual Salute to American Women luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 19, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1556 Rex Dr., Orrville. Lunch will be served promptly at noon. This year’s guest will be Linda Wilson from Ohio Women in History. She will portray Phoebe Ann Oakley Mozee, otherwise known as Annie Oakley. Oakley was born in Patterson Township, Darke County, on August 13, 1860. This amazing woman overcame poverty, prejudice, and physical setbacks to become a star in Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show for 17 years.
Annie Oakley learned to shoot while hunting game to help feed her family after the death of her father. Her marksmanship made her a legend. She not only became a star shooter, but also was a woman who broke barriers for other women in the entertainment industry, as well as in trapshooting, sport hunting, and self-defense. Although somewhat modest, Oakley believed in and campaigned for a woman’s right to hold paid employment, earn equal pay, participate in sports, and defend themselves in their homes and on city streets.
Annie Oakley’s motto was, “Aim at a high mark and you will hit it. No, not the first time, nor the second, and maybe not the third. But keep on aiming and keep on shooting, for only practice will make you perfect. Finally, you’ll hit the bull’s eye of success.”
