A plaque honoring the late Sgt. Michael Maxwell and the winners of the annual scholarship presented in his name is now hanging permanently at the Wayne County Justice Center. Shown here with the plaque are four law-enforcement officers who served with Maxwell: Lt. Ryan Koster, left, chief deputy Doug Johnson, Sheriff Travis Hutchinson and Capt. Recently, a plaque commemorating the Sgt. Michael T. Maxwell Memorial Scholarship winners was placed permanently at the Wayne County Justice Center.

Maxwell served Wayne County as a respected law-enforcement officer, and his 22-year career in the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department included performing his duties as a corrections officer, patrolman, detective and sergeant.

The scholarship was established by his family to honor his enthusiasm for life, his love of family and his three-year battle with cancer, which ended with his passing in September 2012. With the scholarship the Maxwell family wishes to provide educational and training assistance to those who can make the impact Mike’s career in law enforcement made on the community.

Applicants for the scholarship, which is awarded through the Wayne County Community Foundation, must be either current graduating seniors of any high school located in Wayne County; enrolling in or already enrolled in a college, university or technical institute to earn a degree and/or certification in the field of law enforcement; and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (on a 4.0 scale).

Applicants enrolled in graduate or advanced degree/certifications are eligible to apply, but priority will be given to applicants pursuing their undergraduate degrees or initial certification. The 2021 winner will be announced later in May.
