When it comes to singers who tribute Johnny Cash, few do it better than local legend John Schmid, who can crank out Cash’s many hits with the best of them.

On Saturday, July 15, Schmid will present a tribute to Johnny Cash as a free concert at the Moreland Church of God.

The evening will begin with a full meal featuring barbecued chicken and pork, with meals starting at 4:30 p.m. Schmid will then take center stage to present his concert starting at 6 p.m.

Throughout the evening all of the community buildings will be open for the public to explore, including the 1816 Hughes Log Cabin, which is completely and fully restored, as well as the church building.

“The log cabin is done, and it is beautiful,” Moreland Community Historical Society member Gail Miller said. “We encourage everyone who stops by to take the opportunity to check it out.”

Visitors also can view the church, which was restored several years ago. That restoration process included the work of local artist Claude Ruston Baker, who passed away this year unexpectedly.

Baker was known worldwide for his inventive mural style, and while he did a great deal of work throughout Ohio, the United States and even globally, Miller said his work at the church was probably the most extensive work he had done in Northeast Ohio.

“Rusty painted a lot of murals, but anyone who wants to see his work, especially since it was so extensive here, should stop by and celebrate Rusty’s incredible gift and enjoy his life and his work,” Miller said.

Baker’s work on the sanctuary included restoration of the fresco artwork done by local artist Charles Gasche in the 1880s.

Baker painted both the main sanctuary upstairs and a large mural depicting many local historical events and important people in the Wayne and Holmes area. The mural covers the entirety of the basement walls.

The Schmid concert is free to attend, and all food will be served on a donation basis.

The 1882 Historical Moreland Church of God can be used for small weddings, bridal and baby showers, family reunions, holiday parties, small business meetings and more.
