Zaurice Stephens, a local realtor, and the City of Wooster joined together on Sept. 6 for Tree Day in both Schellin Park and on Spink Street.

Stephens and a group of volunteers put mulch down in the playground area of Schellin Park, then planted a variety of trees along Spink Street in their beautification efforts. The trees and mulch were provided by the city.

“We aim to give back to the community by enhancing its appearance and atmosphere,” Stephens said. “As a realtor and someone who serves the community, I see this as an important part of my duty.”

The trees were planted on the same block where Stephens grew up.

“It used to be a drug-infested neighborhood while I was growing up,” he said. “Now I work in this community, and I believe that there’s more than just making a profit here. We need to profit off of the contributions that we make, and today we make that contribution with our bodies and spirits. The body does the work, but the spirit holds the intentions, and everyone came out here today with good intentions.”

Stephens, who works for Keller Williams Legacy Group Realty, credited Joe Avila with the city’s parks department for providing not just the material, but also the equipment needed. All volunteers received a free Tree City T-shirt and were invited to a cookout at Schellin Park.

“Join us next year for Tree Day,” Stephens said. “We can make Wooster a greener, more beautiful place.”
