Mother’s Day is always a special time when families can celebrate Mom’s dedication to raising a family.

While that day is Sunday, May 14, Historic Downtown Millersburg will provide a day out on the town with mother during HDM’s Vintage in the Village celebration on Saturday, May 13.

Vintage in the Village will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and mothers everywhere and their entire family will find plenty of ways to take in all of the sights and sounds of the event.

“This has always been a special event, but with it being the day before Mother’s Day, it’s the perfect way to spend a day with Mom and let her know how much she means to you as a family,” HDM Director Judy Lamp said.

When Historic Downtown Millersburg changed the name of its annual downtown event from Antiques in the Alley to Vintage in the Village, one of the things Lamp wanted to see was items from antique vendors and artisan demonstrations dotting downtown Millersburg’s streets surrounding the courthouse.

“We’ve really tried hard to bring in top-notch vendors that make the event first-class, and that is the direction we wanted to take this,” Lamp said. “I’m really excited with this year’s event because we have some new and unique vendors and demonstrations for people to enjoy.”

Vintage in the Village features many types of collectibles including antiques, recycled items, up-cycled items, glassware and metal lawn art. Vintage in the Village encompasses the entire town of Millersburg, centering around the Holmes County Courthouse lawn and spreading through alleys and parking lots, encompassing local businesses providing sales and offers.

“Our vendors are truly amazing,” Lamp said. “We have a lot of the old favorites and have invited some new ones in to create a wide range of items. We have one lady who has antique glass. We have a vendor with some stunning potholders that look like animals and tractors and a lot more. They are really well done. But all of our vendors offer top-quality items that are ideal for finding a gift for Mom on Mother’s Day.”

Not only do the vendors and demonstrators show up in force, but also the local merchants roll out the red carpet to make the day special.

“Our downtown merchants go all out for this event,” Lamp said. “They bring in special items, have sales and everyone really gears up for the big event.”

While visitors can find plenty of purchases, they also can watch many different artisans on hand who are showcasing their respective talents. That list includes basket weaving, wood carving, looming and other skilled laborers whose techniques and skills hearken back to an older time.

“There’s just a lot of really neat things to experience,” Lamp said. “It’s fun to walk around all the alleys and see everything the vendors have to offer, and I absolutely love the demonstrators. People can walk up through the main area and see all of these artisans creating some really neat things, and people can stand and watch and ask questions, and it adds so much to the event.”

While the event draws a large crowd to town, Lamp said because it is spread out throughout the downtown area, it doesn’t feel cramped.

A new addition to the event this year is an antique and vintage car show sponsored by Classic Cruisers Car Show. The display of old cars should take people back to their favorite decade in the Commercial & Savings Bank parking lot behind the Chamber of Commerce, just north of the main square. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There also will be food vendors in addition to the restaurants dotting the HDM downtown area that will allow people to dine and continue their day of vintage shopping without ever leaving the downtown area.

Vintage in the Village is an event that ushers people back into eras gone by, and with it being an all-day event, there’s plenty of time to peruse it all and soak in the atmosphere.
