Summary: The music faculty of the Wooster City School District proved that they could do more than teach during the district’s annual Music Faculty Recital on Jan. 26. Music students from the Wooster City School District normally see their music teachers in the confines of the classroom. But for one evening student musicians had the unique opportunity to see their instructors playing another role – that of performer. On Jan. 26 the members of the instrumental and vocal music faculty of the Wooster City School district presented their annual Music Faculty Recital at Zion Lutheran Church. Over the course of the hour long concert the faculty members presented a wide variety of selections including Dennis Bartelheim’s driving percussion solo entitled “Engine Room”, Doug Bennett performing “Tuba Concerto”, a trio of saxophone duets performed by Diane Adams and Tom Long and a Bach Sonata performed by Loretta Adkins on the viola. Dan Adams and Doug Bennett also collaborated on a performance of the moving “A Song For Japan”, a trombone piece composed by Steven Verhelst as a tribute to those still suffering from the effects of the powerful earthquake that swept through Japan last March. For the finale of the concert the faculty members and a trio of invited guest performers came together as a choir to perform three numbers including Thomas Morley’s “Sing We and Chant It”, a spiritual entitled “Soon-ah Will Be Done” and Vincent Youmans’ classic “More Than You Know.” Proceeds from the concert will be used to support the Wooster High School Music Parents Association Scholarship Program, which assists student musicians defray the costs of private lessons.
