Summary: Discovering ways everyone can help protect the environment is what the fourth annual Scarlet, Gray and Green Fair was all about. The familiar scarlet and gray colors of The Ohio State University took on a decidedly green hue as the OARDC campus hosted the fourth annual Scarlet, Gray and Green Fair on April 19. Throughout the daylong event upwards of 2000 visitors flocked to the campus to see the latest advances in eco-friendly products and services and got a glimpse into the future as scientists and industry alike work toward creating an environmentally sustainable future for generations to come. As visitors made their way through the over 70 booth and displays housed in and around Fisher Auditorium they learned more about how “doing the right thing for the environment” can go hand in hand with cost savings. After calculating their carbon footprint and learning more about how to reduce it at the Wayne County Sustainable Energy Network booth, visitors explores alternative heating and cooling options including geothermal and solar power product offerings from area contractors. At the Dominion East Ohio Gas booth, representatives from the company were on hand to show visitors how to reduce their heating costs by conducting an energy audit of their homes, while Holmes-Wayne Electric’s display visually demonstrated the advantages of using energy efficient light bulbs. Nearby at the Community Action of Wayne / Medina Counties demonstrated the cost savings that can be realized by properly weatherizing a home. After taking the opportunity to sample organic foods offered by a host of local companies, visitors also had the chance to see the latest hybrid vehicle offerings from automobile manufacturers. Learning about conservation efforts by local organizations was also a major part of the fair. Visitors seized the opportunity to get up close and personal with live animals from the Akron and Cleveland Zoo and learned more about opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors at the Wilderness Center, in Ohio’s state parks and along the Rails to Trails project. The efforts of area companies to make their products and manufacturing operations more environmentally friendly were also on display at the fair. At the Frito Lay booth, company representatives were on hand to outline the green manufacturing practices employed at their production facilities while HolmesCrafter Furniture showed off their line of outdoor furniture made of recycled materials. The City of Wooster also used the fair to introduce the citizens of Wooster to its new recycling effort, which come July will mean the elimination of traditional blue bags in favor of curbside recycling bins. Acting as the keynote speaker for the 2011 Scarlet, Gray and Green Fair was Dr. Bobby Moser, Dean of Ohio State's College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. In his remarks Moser noted that the fair “is a celebration of our efficiencies and our innovations” and helps the university showcase its sustainability efforts. Moser outlined the university’s current efforts to create a sustainable future through its campus construction projects and the cutting edge research being conducted by the university’s scientists and looked at what is to come in the future. “As we celebrate our many achievements today we’re just scratching the surface of our potential,” said Moser, stressing the importance of the university and the community working together to create a better future. “Sustainability will not be achieved by wishing and hoping. It will be achieved when we all work together – the university, in industry and the communities – for a common goal of a more sustainable world for the generations that come after us,” said Moser. The Coordinating sponsors of the Scarlet, Gray and Green Fair were ATI, OARDC, OSU Extension. Over a dozen financial sponsors also made the event possible.
