08/17/10 Not a Bad Week

Not a Bad Week You may have guessed by reading my last few columns that August isn't my favorite month. This week was the exception, several things came together to make it a pretty good week. We went back up to the lake, and caught a nice mess of perch. Then Saturday, and Sunday I ran Charlie in a National Shoot to Retrieve trial. I just got him back from the trainer, and he retrieves perfectly now. I am really looking forward to traveling around the country, and running him in a bunch of trials this fall. The big news this week was that I got to hear from a lot of readers. Typically I will get 5 or 6 emails a month from readers. Some enjoyed a story, others chide me about goofing off so much, and I appreciate them all. This week the flood gates opened, and my mailbox filled with comments. The majority were correcting me on a mistake I made last week. Crow season is three days a week, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. They took the Thursday hunt away when we got Sunday hunting in Ohio. I knew that, and I don't know what I was thinking when I included Thursday. Sorry about the bad information. Whatever the reasons for the emails, I would like to thank you for taking the time to write. I write this column because I enjoy reliving the experiences I am blessed with, but it really feels good to know a few other folks are enjoying them also. There is another thing that has me very excited this week. I was out scouting the grain fields, and watering holes in anticipation of dove season coming in September 1st. I am seeing more doves than I ever have. The population around here has exploded, and I am seeing them in places that I never have before. I spend a lot of time wing shooting, whether it's the 2 or 3 bird dog trials I run every month, the wild bird trips out west, or the grouse hunting in Michigan. I enjoy them all, but dove hunting is my favorite. The first two weeks of September are always scheduled a year in advance for a daily trip to the dove fields. Dove hunting has it all for me. You don't have to find them, just set out some decoys in a flyway, and they come to you. You get to sit down while you are hunting. If you use a sub gauge gun, they are as challenging to hit as any grouse. You don't have to get up early, just get to your spot by 8 am, and they will show up. Also, I get to spend time with my English Springer Spaniel. Princess Pickle Bunny spends most of the year in the house watching TV, but the first two weeks of September she turns into the “Black & White Wiener of Death” She loves to retrieve downed birds, and if I am not hitting many, she will retrieve my buddies birds back to me. I have almost as much fun watching her, as I do shooting doves.
