Summary: A moment of silence and the raising of the American flag marked the opening of the 162nd Wayne County Fair on September 10. Before the rides, game and food vendors opened for business and the competitions and contests got underway the Wayne County Fair Board marked the opening of the 162nd Wayne County Fair with a solemn flag raising ceremony and a moment of silence in memory of the lives lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. As members of the 555th Honors Detachment raised the American flag and a 9/11 commemorative flag to the top of the flagpole and then solemnly lowered it to half staff in memory of the victims of September 11, the acapella quartet Sweet Spirit lead the crowd gathered at the Wayne County fairgrounds pavilion in the singing of the National Anthem. The flag remained at half mast on September 10 and 11 in honor and memory of those lost on 9/11. A moment of silence was also observed at 1:00 p.m. on September 11 in their honor. Before pausing for a moment of silence in memory of the victims of 9/11 uniformed veterans posted flag representing the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines as well as a POW/MIA flag. In addition to the 555th Honors Detachments members of local veterans groups as well as members of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office took part in the ceremony.
