SUMMARY: Was spotted walking through nearby yard; had .45 handgun at time of arrest A North Canton man charged with attempting to burglarize a Charm business Jan. 28 was in possession of a .45 caliber handgun when arrested by deputies. James J. Vanest, 57, 2520 Kingswood Street NE, is charged in Holmes County Municipal Court with breaking and entering, having weapons under disability, possessing criminal tools, receiving stolen property and vandalism. He is currently incarcerated at the Holmes County Jail. The charges against Vanest stem from Jan. 28, when Vanest allegedly attempted to break in to a Charm sporting goods store. According to Holmes County Sheriff’s chief deputy Richard Haun, deputies responded to an alarm at 2:47 a.m. at the sporting goods store, located on County Road 70. Upon arrival, deputies found all doors to be locked, Haun said, and one set of doors had marks consistent with an attempted forced entry. Deputies then received information that a man was spotted walking through the yard of a nearby residence. Deputies responded to the residence and tracked Vanest to a deck using the sheriff’s K9 unit. Vanest was questioned by deputies and found to be carrying a firearm. Vanest further admitted to attempting to break into the sporting goods store, Haun said. Haun said Vanest was spotted by occupants of the residence, who were awakened by the sound of the store alarm. “They heard the alarm, which in Charm in the middle of the night is going to make a lot of noise,” Haun said. “They were looking out the window when they saw the individual (Vanest) walking in the yard.” Vanest has an “extensive” prior record, Haun said, including theft offenses. Vanest’s prior record includes a conviction barring him from possessing firearms. Haun said Vanest appears to have driven to the area and a vehicle has been identified and impounded. Haun said Vanest may be tied to previous “crimes of a similar nature” that targeted the same sporting goods store. Vanest is scheduled to appear in municipal court Feb. 4.
