SUMMARY: Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor visits with local Republicans A campaign by state Republicans to encourage early voting visited Holmes County just two days after the Supreme Court struck down Republican efforts to limit early voting. Ohio Lt. Governor Mary Taylor visited Millersburg Thursday Oct. 18 to campaign for the Mitt Romney/ Paul Ryan Presidential ticket. The stop was part of a bus tour with a mission to visit all of Ohio’s 88 counties and remind voters about early-, and absentee-, voting. Holmes County was the bus tour’s 40th stop. Taylor spoke briefly about early voting with about 60 persons who gathered at the Holmes County Republican party headquarters on Jackson Street. Taylor said she voted early this year, and her son, who just turned 18, voted early in his first Presidential election. “I’m here to re-enforce the importance of voting early,” Taylor said. “What we have is too important to wait. We have to send a loud message to Washington that we are not impressed with the current administration.” That Taylor would encourage early voting is somewhat ironic, as Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted has tried, unsuccessfully, to limit hours and days for early voting. On Oct. 16, the U.S. Sumpreme Court ruled that early voting must continue through the Nov. 3 weekend and up to Nov. 5, something Husted tried to shut down. Husted was overruled earlier by federal judges when he tried to limit early voting hours in certain counties, differing from the hours of other counties. Husted has said the federal courts are restricting states rights and has argued that early voting schedules put a hardship on local boards of elections. Husted plans to appeal the Supreme Court decision. Taylor said voting early is also a chance to get off the Republican call list. She said local boards of elections will notify the campaign after someone votes. On the topic of campaign efforts, Taylor said she feels Democrats “are motivated but I think we’re way more motivated”. She thanked those Republicans in attendance for their efforts supporting and promoting their candidates, including those in local races. For those who vote early, Taylor said she hopes they get “a little extra or free time on election day”. Taylor spoke with individual voters following her remarks and opened the campaign bus for tours. The bus also had scheduled stops in Coshocton, Jefferson, Muskingum and Tuscarawas counties for Thursday. KUTS: Ohio Lt. Gov.
