SUMMARY: Hope added exposure leads to identification of suspect Surveillance video of a burglary at a Berlin business can be viewed on-line at the Wayne County Sheriff’s website. The video, of what appears to be a male suspect forcing open a cash box and cash register at Boyd and Wurthman restaurant Nov. 7, was brought to the attention of Wayne County law enforcement by Holmes County Sheriff’s deputies, Wayne County Sheriff’s Capt. Doug Hunter said. “We were contacted by detectives last week who were interested in sharing the information,” Hunter said. “Criminals seldom respect jurisdictional boundaries. We thought we would share the video and picture with the public in the hopes that larger exposure would lead to identification of the suspect.” The website shows a photo of the suspect as he approaches the restaurant by a side door and two video clips of the burglary in process. The suspect is wearing a hooded sweatshirt. In a few frames, the suspect’s face is clearly visible but the features are fuzzy. Holmes County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Nathan Fritz said his office is working to enhance the video to get a better likeness of the suspect. According to Holmes County Sheriff’s reports, the restaurant was burglarized at approximately 12:15 a.m. The suspect forced entry through a side door, then proceeded to pry open the cash register and a cash box. An undetermined amount of cash was stolen. The video shows the suspect in the process of opening the cash register and using a pry bar to open something in the cash register counter. The video quality is somewhat grainy and blurry. Fritz said surveillance video is helpful when trying to identify a specific suspect. While video is often helpful in bringing a case to a conclusion, Fritz said, surveillance video is usually of poor quality as a rule. “The cameras are usually placed at an overhead angle, and if (the suspect) is wearing a hood we’re not going to see much,” Fritz said. Boyd and Wurthman’s was also burglarized last year. Fritz said he is unaware of any possible connection between last year’s burglary and the burglary Nov. 7. The burglary remains under investigation, Fritz said. Anyone with information should contact the Holmes County Sheriff’s office at 330-674-1936.
