11\23 Things to be thankful for

Thanksgiving has as many different meanings as there are people to celebrate it. To most of us it is a day spent with family, and loved ones. Many of us express our thanks in a prayer before a large meal. Visit with each other while consuming way to much food, then spend the rest of the day watching TV, or planning a Black Friday shopping trip. The reason for this is tradition. Most of the folks I know, including myself fell into this rut years ago, and since it is comfortable, and easy we have been wasting a great opportunity every since. By the time you read this it will be to late to do anything about it this year, but maybe I can plant a seed for next year. To me the best way to show appreciation is to pass on a good deed or gift to someone. Since this particular holiday is supposed to be about expressing gratitude it seems ready made to introduce someone into our outdoor sports. It could be as simple as shooting some targets, blasting away at some clay birds, or even organizing a morning rabbit hunt. It might be an opportunity to invite a youngster, or uncle to a day of fishing. The possibilities are endless, and it may give them a chance to experience our passion for our outdoor activities, and maybe help develop their own interests. My list of things to be thankful for is as long as it usually is. Once again this year I was blessed with way more good things than I deserved. Not only the many days spent fishing, hunting, and bird dog trialing, but also my good health, and wonderful family. With my second daughter off to college, it has given my wife, and me a chance to enjoy each others company. I had forgotten what a pleasure it is having lots of time with her. In fact it has been so enjoyable that we are talking about me even going with her and doing some of the things that she likes to do. Aint love wonderful. All that will have to wait just a little longer though, because Monday is the opening day of deer gun season. This year should be special because all the old gang are planning on coming to Jackson County to hunt. Sunday morning for the first time in 5 years Cowboy Jon, Randy the French hater, Captain McNish, and I will be heading down to the cabin. For many years the best part of deer camp has been the time spent with good friends. I am sure we will kill a few deer, and maybe even harvest a good one or two. However, the highlight will be the evening card games, and reminiscing about past hunts. I don't know whether it's getting old, or maturing, but for me the hunting isn't as enjoyable as the fellowship. Catch you later Rick
