SUMMARY: Trustees approve 2013 budget Pomerene Hospital’s diabetes education program is off to a strong start, seeing 115 patients this year. Nicole Kolacz, vice president of patient services, informed the Pomerene Hospital Board of Trustees Thursday Nov. 29 that the hospital’s diabetes program has achieved accreditation by the American Association of Diabetes Educators. Pomerene’s diabetes education program has been active since March and is served by Register Nurse Kathy Snyder. Snyder works with diabetes patients who have contact with the hospital. Services are offered on an inpatient and outpatient basis, Kolacz said, and centers around updating the patient with current information about their care. A needs assessment is performed to see how best the diabetes educator can help. For example, a plan of care drawn up for a newly diagnosed diabetic will include an all- encompassing look at everything from diet to medication. Others may need to update the same information. The diabetes educator works with the patient’s physician as well. The idea is to get patients focused on their care, heading off medical emergencies. “We feel that continued support through group classes and follow-up phone calls are essential elements to managing diabetes from home,” Snyder said. “We are here to guide, educate and support our community toward better health.” The hospital also plans to offer in-house diabetes classes twice a month. In other business, trustees approved the hospital’s 2013 budget, as presented by Chief Financial Officer Jason Justus. Justus presented a budget of $27 million in expected revenues and $26.7 million in expenditures. The budget includes $750,000 for capital improvements. Justus said the patient care related items leads the list of expected capitol improvements, at $263,000. IT is close behind, at $101,000. The capitol improvements budget is crafted with input from all departments, who submit wish lists. The list is prioritized, and finalized after meetings with department heads. The request for 2013 were $1.64 million, Justus said. The next meeting of the Pomerene Hospital Board of Trustee is Dec. 27.
