Summary: The 2012 Junior Fair Dairy Sale totals sailed way above the 2011 totals, topping $110,000. Junior Fair dairy committee members watched in amazement as bids at the September 21, 2012 25th annual Junior Fair Dairy Sale began to climb beyond the $80,500 record set in 2011. Bob and Helen Clark set the bar high right off the starting line, bidding a record $6,500 for the number one basket of dairy products and a beautiful carved bookcase from Mullet Heirlooms of Sugarcreek. Bob Clark said, upon purchasing the bookcase with an engraved figure of a Holstein cow, “I told my wife, if the Holstein is the first basket, we are going to buy it. I thought it would go for $5,000 or so. I never dreamed I’d spend $6,500 for it. That’s a lot of money, but I’m glad I did. It’s worth it. I’ve been buying them for 25 years now.” Clark was one of those who originally conceived the idea of the sale 25 years ago. At the time, organizers hoped to raise about $5,000, but they brought in a great deal more, finishing with $17,000, according to sale auctioneer Steve Cronebaugh. Senior Dairy Princess Mercedes Sisson and Junior Dairy Princess Victoria Deem held up the dairy products, encouraging the audience to bid, while class winners from each of the dairy breeds hoisted the baskets into the air as an incentive. Top breed winners were Clinton Steele, Kurt Finton, Rachel Anderson, Henry Specht, Stephanie Steele, and Sue Feller. The other basket buyers were Mako’s Market and Pharmacy at $5,500; In Memory of Orlo and Ruth Brown at $5,750; J&J Refuse and the Kimble Co. at $6,000; Jimita Hosteins and RGX Trucking at $6,600; and Gordon Transport at $6,900, for a total of $37,250. Once the remaining 33 smaller baskets were purchased, the grand total came in at $110,900. “That is definitely a new record for us,” commented Lorrie Lautzenheiser, secretary for the junior fair dairy committee. “We also have had an additional $3,200 dollars given today in straight donations from 18 contributors, plus over the next several weeks we will get more checks mailed to the committee. We always do.” She added that in addition to the regular buyers, two new buyers, the Sisson Family and Bobby Clark Family, came onboard for the 25th anniversary. “Last year, after the dairy auction, Kuester Implement, who is one of our donors, came up to us and asked if there was something they could do for the 25th anniversary of the sale,” noted the secretary. “So they gave us a beautiful, engraved bench commemorating the anniversary. The Tuscarawas County Democratic Party purchased the bench at our sale for $1,900.” “We are thrilled with the sale,” said Lautzenheiser. “The junior fair dairy committee and the 4-H youth are so grateful for the generosity of the individuals, families, and businesses who regularly support our Junior Fair Dairy Sale.” Donations to the Tuscarawas County Junior Fair Dairy Sale can be mailed to: c/o Craig Powell 9763 Ragersville Rd, Baltic, OH 43804.
