Summary: Children from throughout the community headed to the Justice Center for the opportunity to meet Santa himself during Wayne County Sheriff Tom Maurer’s annual “Santa for Charity” event. Wayne County Sheriff Tom Maurer donned a very different type of uniform on Nov. 26 when invited the community to the Justice Center to visit with Santa. Dressed as Santa Claus, Maurer handed out presents, cookies, candy and punch to the dozens of youngsters who attended the free event. Those who attended were asked to bring along non-perishable food in exchange for a photograph with the jolly old elf himself. The professional photographer on hand to take the photos then sent files with the pictures to each family via e-mail. According to Maurer, the food collected during the “Santa for Charity” event will be donated to People to People Ministries to help them re-stock their pantry for the holidays. The “Santa for Charity” event has grown steadily since it began just three years ago. According to Maurer, this year a record number of children took part in this holiday favorite. For those who attended, the event presented a unique opportunity to receive and to give some holiday cheer at the same time. “We share joy and peace and candy and a little bit of hope and Christmas cheer,” said Maurer.
