A student and an educator from the Wooster City School District have been recognized for excellence both inside and outside of the classroom by the Ohio Lottery. Kean Elementary School sixth grade student Hannah DeHart was named an Academic All Star by the Ohio Lottery for the month of October. The Ohio Lottery’s Academic All Star program recognizes outstanding student leaders who have exhibited a commitment to academic excellence. Each month, the organization recognizes one student in each of nine geographic regions across the State of Ohio based on improvement in academics, leadership abilities, citizenship and extracurricular activities. DeHart was nominated for the honor by Kean Elementary School Principal Peg Butler who describes DeHart as “a very mature and responsible student...(who) serves as a positive role model for her peers and others in the school.” According to Butler DeHart participates in numerous class and school events and serves the school and the community on a daily basis by raising and lowering the America flag. “It was very nice of Ms. Butler to nominate me for this award,” said DeHart adding “I would like to thank the Ohio Lottery for choosing me. It means a lot.” “The district would like to congratulate Hannah for receiving this award,” said Wooster City Schools Superintendent Michael Tefs. “She is an excellent student who has a bright future ahead of her. She’s a great example of what a Wooster City Schools education is all about.” Parkview Elementary School third grade teacher Melissa Arko was also named the Ohio Lottery Teacher of the Month for October. The Ohio Lottery’s Teacher of the Month award recognizes outstanding teachers for their dedication, professionalism and work on behalf of the state’s young people. Each month, the organization recognizes one teacher in each of nine geographic regions across Ohio based on contributions to their school, excellence in the classroom, leadership abilities, citizenship, community involvement and a variety of other criteria. Arko was nominated for the award by Parkview Elementary Principal Julie Frankl. “Melissa is an extremely dedicated teacher,” said Frankl adding “she does her best to make our students with disabilities feel comfortable and works closely with our intervention specialist to ensure student success.” According to Frankl among her many accomplishments, Arko has created “Team Zarko” with the help of her teaching partner, Michelle Zerrer, and the Title 1 reading coaches, Sally Griffin and Karen Linch. She uses sportsmanship and motivational team concepts to practice achievement and test-taking skills. As the student council advisor, she models a true representative democracy by having students sign petitions, give speeches and participate in elections. “I’m very honored to be a Teacher of the Month,” said Arko. “All of our teachers and staff work hard every day to make sure our students are getting the world-class education they deserve. It’s a great feeling to know my ideas are making a difference.” “We would like to thank Mrs. Arko for all of the hard work and dedication she puts forth every day. She is very deserving of this recognition,” said Tefs. “She has been a big proponent for getting the latest technology in our classrooms, which will help ensure student success now and in the future.” As Teacher of the Month and an Academic All Star Arko and DeHart received numerous items, including a certificate of excellence, four tickets to a local event, recognition during the event and a variety of Partners in Education merchandise.
