121211 Wooster Community Hospital lights Trees of Love

Summary: Brightly lit Christmas trees line the front of Wooster Community Hospital thanks to a very special program of the Wooster Community Hospital Auxiliary. In a holiday tradition dating back 17 years, the members of the Wooster Community Hospital Auxiliary threw the switch to light the 57 Christmas trees that line Beall Avenue as part of the Trees of Love program during the organization’s Holiday Celebration of Lights on Nov. 29. Through the Trees of Love Program the Auxiliary invited local families and businesses to purchase trees in honor or in remembrance of a special person. Each four foot cut Christmas Trees was decorated with lights and marked with a plaque bearing the names of the honoree and donor. The proceeds from the sale will be used to support the work of the auxiliary. According to Wooster Community Hospital Chief Executive Officer Bill Sheron, who read the names of the honorees for this year’s Trees of Love program during the tree lighting ceremony, the program offers community members a special way to remember their loved ones during the holiday season. “I think this is the time of year that we often reflect on family members and think of times gone by so we’re very happy to have this recognition here at the hospital,” said Sheron. The program also provides ones of the most beautiful lighting displays in the city. “I love to look at those trees,” said Auxiliary Vice President Mary Alice Streeter, adding “I always think that when I come up Beall Avenue at Christmastime that it’s a beacon.” “It really makes a big difference on Beall Avenue when you come up and see the trees all lit during the holiday season,” Streeter added. Streeter also expressed her appreciation to everyone who supported the Auxiliary by purchasing a tree in memory or in honor of a loved one or friend. The trees which line the front of the hospital not only create a festive atmosphere for the community to enjoy during the Holidays but also serve as a fundraiser for the Auxiliary. The Auxiliary provides financial support to the hospital by underwriting the hospital’s free valet parking service, purchasing the transportation vans, paying for mammograms for qualifying women, purchasing medical equipment and furniture for the hospital and providing scholarships to area students. Each year Auxiliary members also donate thousands of hours to the hospital providing inter-building mail delivery services, staffing the reception desk, taking baby pictures, sewing hospital gowns and running the hospital gift shop. In addition to recognizing the patrons of the Trees of Love Program, the evening included musical performances by vocal ensembles from area high schools including the Wooster High School Jazz Choir under the direction of Amy Gilbert, the Triway High School Performing Choir under the direction of Stan Willis and the Central Christian Varsity Singers under the direction of Tim Shue.
