SUMMARY: Shooting believed to be accidental, police say An Akron man charged in the Feb. 16 shooting death of a Wooster woman was banned from possessing firearms under state law. Andre I. Wilson, 29, 979 Delia Avenue, is being held on one count of reckless homicide in the shooting death of Elisesha S. Mathis, 29. The charge stems from Feb. 16, when Wilson allegedly discharged a handgun, fatally injuring Mathis. Wilson has multiple domestic violence convictions in Summit County. The convictions ban him from possessing firearms under state law. Summit County court officials were unable to provide information as to whether sentencing orders for Wilson included a weapons disability. However, anyone convicted of crimes of violence are under a weapons disability by state law. Wilson was first convicted of domestic violence in 2004. He was convicted of felony domestic violence in 2011. Wilson further had outstanding warrants at the time for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving while intoxicated. According to Wooster Police Detective Sgt. Robert Merillat, the shooting occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. when Mathis and Wilson were inside a van parked in front of a North Buckeye Street residence. Mathis and Wilson had been out that evening with a group of people, Merillat said, and were stopped at the Buckeye Street residence, where one of the group lives. While there, Wilson was handling a handgun when it went off, firing a single bullet. Mathis was shot in the upper torso and later died from the wound. Police were notified of her death at approximately 1:30 a.m., Merillat said. Wilson was intoxicated at the time of the shooting, Merillat said. Merillat said the shooting appears to be accidental. Additional charges are expected to be brought before the grand jury against Wilson, Merillat said, as well as the charge of reckless homicide. “I think the facts will at least support reckless homicide,” Merillat said. “(The investigation indicates) the shot was fired as a result of mishandling a handgun.” Wilson is being held on a $100,000 bond.
