SUMMARY: Paving projects, repairs part of $2.5 billion state-wide construction season Repair of a landslide on Interstate 77 will be part of a $22 million orange barrel season planned for Tuscarawas County by the Ohio Department of Transportation. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has a 14 project, $22,520,340 construction program for bridges and state roads for 2014. The construction is part of a $2.5 billion, state-wide construction season which the Kasich administration is hailing as the largest in Ohio history. The slide, located on I-77 just north of the Guernsey County line, occurred Jan. 2, a casualty of the 2013 - 2014 winter. ODOT District 11 spokesperson Becky Giauque said the landslide damaged a concrete retaining wall. Giauque said repair of a slide usually takes a few years. ODOT will stabilize the affected area and the slides are monitored by a geotechical team until it can be permanently fixed. “The immediate concern is to stabilize the slide, and then we have to go through the design phase,” Giauque said. “There are things we are required to do such as environmental review and it’s not unusual for a year or two to go by.” The repairs are estimated at $990,000. The project is underway and is scheduled to wrap up by the end of June. The slide is one of two that will be repaired in Tuscarawas County by ODOT. The second is on state Route 39 west of the Carroll County line. Resurfacing projects are planned for state Route 800, I-77, state Route 212, state Route 516 and U.S. Route 250. The state Route 800 project runs from Freeport to Dennison for approximately 16 and a half miles and includes resurfacing in Harrison County. Paving on state Route 212 will start at state Route 800 and run approximately four miles through Zoar. State Route 516 will be repaved for 3.7 miles between Dundee and County Road 80. The state Route 212 and state Route 516 work will be bid as a single project. Repaving of U.S. 250 will begin at the state Route 39/I-77 interchange at New Philadephia and run approximately four and a half miles to the state Route 259/Schoenbrunn exit. Paving for I-77 will run north and south of U.S. 36 and will include approximately 3.5 miles. Spot paving in Strasburg is also scheduled for various portions of 12th Street, Zeltman Avenue, Railroad Avenue and 1rst Street. Work on bridges is scheduled for I-77 over County Road 55; and I-77 about one mile north of the County Road 80 exit. A half-mile widening project in New Philadelphia is scheduled for state Route 39 on West High Avenue from the railroad tracks to 7th street. A sidewalk project is scheduled for Tuscarawas village on School Street, from Main Street to East Avenue. Phase 8 of the Dennison Depot Museum will be funded through ODOT, as will enhancements to the tourist information center in New Philadelphia. The third phase of a county-wide guardrail reconstruction project will also be funded through ODOT. Start dates for the projects range from March through July. Some projects are scheduled for completion next year.
