SUMMARY: U.S. Route 62, state route 515 scheduled for repaving Holmes County won’t see any of the turnpike dollars funding Ohio’s $2.5 billion road construction season, but that doesn’t mean it will be left out this summer. The Ohio Department of Transportation will spend $7,142,362 on eight projects in Holmes County. The projects include resurfacing 17 miles of roadway, replacement of culverts, reconstruction of guardrails and a resurfacing project for the Holmes County Trial. Governor Kasich is hailing this year’s construction season as the largest in Ohio history. Much of the funding is coming from bonding the Ohio turnpike for $1.5 billion - not a penny of which will be spent in Holmes, according to ODOT District 11 spokesperson Becky Giauque. That doesn’t mean Holmes County and District 11 won’t benefit. Giauque said the extra money brought in through the turnpike bonds has made other available dollars go further. “We’re able to get more things done out there,” Giauque said. “None of the turnpike funds are being spent in eastern Ohio, but it has in turn helped free up more for our district.” Paving projects are scheduled for U.S. Route 62 and state Route 515. The U.S. 62 project is a 11.88 mile resurfacing from Killbuck to Berlin. State Route 515 will be repaved for 5.5 miles from state Route 39 at Walnut Creek to U.S. 62 near Winesburg. Both projects have a Aug. 1 start date, with the U.S. 62 project scheduled for completion Oct. 31 and the state Route 515 project for Sept. 30. Culvert replacements are scheduled for the following areas: U.S. 62 just south of Glen Drive in Millersburg; U.S. 62 between Brinkhaven and Stillwell; state Route 83 south of U.S. 62; state Route 60, just south of Welcome. A culvert construction project on U.S. 62 about one and a half miles west of state Route 515 is also scheduled for 2014. Three of the culvert replacement projects are part of a larger project including Belmont and Columbiana counties. A landslide that occurred in 2011 near Killbuck and stabilized by ODOT will get a permanent fix involving 300 feet of embankment reconstruction. The Holmes County Rails to Trails resurfacing will run from Millersburg north to the Wayne County line. The county will receive $330,000 for guardrail repair, to be carried out in various locations.
