SUMMARY: Baltic teenager cited A bus driver and a Baltic teenager were treated for injuries after a April 2 accident in Berlin. Injured in the crash were Seth M. Miller, 17, Troendly Road, Baltic, and Mary Ellen Beachy, 45, Township Road 80, Millersburg. Miller was treated and released from Union Hospital, and Beachy was later treated for a sore back and leg pain at Pomerene Hospital, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol, Wooster Post, reports. Beachy was the passenger in a 2014 East Holmes School bus that was driven by Ervin C. Yoder, 68, Maple Street, Berlin. According to OSP reports, the bus was traveling eastbound on state Route 39 at 3:55 p.m. when it was struck on the front driver’s side by a 1997 Jeep driven by Miller. Miller had been traveling westbound on state Route 39 when he went left of center, striking the bus. There were no children aboard the bus at the time. The crash occurred in Berlin about 500 feet from Berlin Elementary. Miller was taken to Union Hospital by his parents from the crash site, according to OSP reports. According to East Holmes Superintendent Joe Edinger, the bus was between routes when the crash occurred. Yoder, a substitute bus driver, was driving to learn a bus route and Beachy, who is employed as a full time bus driver, was riding along. Edinger said the bus was returning from a route and was in Berlin to pick up elementary students for the trip home. Yoder stayed with the bus following the crash, Edinger said, and Beachy was able to finish her route using another bus. Miller was cited for left of center. OSP reports indicate that Miller had taken his eyes off the roadway “but was not distracted by any device, such as a cell phone or radio”. The bus is insured, Edinger said, and the extent of the damage has not been determined. Edinger said it is unfortunate that the accident happened, but is thankful that it was not worse. He said he spoke briefly to Miller and his parents and is glad that Miller “was not injured worse”. The bus involved had just been purchased by East Holmes and was put into service on the first day of the school year, Edinger said. Edinger said safety features present in the new model of school bus may have lessened the impact of the crash. “It may be that because it was the new bus, I have two employees coming in to work today,” Edinger said. Edinger said the schools will use spare busses, and routes should not be affected by the accident.
