SUMMARY: Holmes County Sheriff's communications officer Sally Marmet was remembered by local law enforcement in ceremony May 18. Marmet's name was added to a roll call of those who have served their community and gone peacefully to their rest. A Holmes County Sheriff’s dispatcher was added to the list of honored dead Sunday May 18 at an annual memorial observed by local law enforcement. Communications officer Sally Marmet was remembered in a brief address by Deputy Sgt. Eric Troyer during Holmes County’s 2014 law enforcement memorial. The event, organized by the Millersburg Police Auxiliary, memorializes Ohio peace officers killed in the line of duty the previous year. A list of past law enforcement officers who served Holmes County and have gone peacefully to rest is also recited as a local memorial. Marmet passed away from cancer July 26, having just celebrated her 60th birthday. She served with the sheriff’s office since April, 1993. Troyer remembered Marmet as “always caring and compassionate” when handling phone calls, and as someone who approached the job with everyone’s best interests in mind. “She had a passion to to help everyone in any way she could,” Troyer said. “Sally kept everyone safe with all the most up to date information to all who were on the other end of her radios, and she never missed a check to an officer on a dangerous call.” Akron police officer Russ Long was the only death in the line of duty in Ohio last year. Long died in August from complications of an injury suffered in a car crash in 1991. Long was a passenger in an Akron patrol car that crashed in the midst of a high speed pursuit. Long was in a coma for a year, only to awake and find he would never walk again. Long’s death has been attributed to the deterioration of his health due to the injury. Prior to the crash, Long had served with the Akron Police Department for five years. Holmes County has lost one peace officer in the line of duty, sheriff Jacob Bell. Bell was shot and killed in 1909 while apprehending a fugitive near Big Priarie. Millersburg Auxiliary Chaplain Eldon Trubee offered a prayer of thanks for the sacrifices made by peace officers every day. “As we leave this place, may we not only remember those who have passed on, but those who continue to serve...they enter an often troubled world,” Trubee said. The memorial was attended by officers from the Millersburg Police Department, Millersburg Police Auxiliary, Holmes County Sheriff’s office, Glenmont Police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Wooster Post.
