SUMMARY: Drug habit led to thefts A Holmesville man who stole more than $2,000 from his grandparents in one month to feed a drug habit was sentenced Tuesday May 24 in Holmes County Common Pleas Court. Jamie T. Jarvis, 22, 7099 state Route 83, was sentenced by Common Pleas Judge Robert D. Rinfret to restitution and one year in prison on one count of theft from an elderly person and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. The theft charge stems from Dec. 28, 2010 to Jan. 25. According to Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Chris Oehl, Jarvis stole $2,255 from accounts held by his grandparents. Jarvis was in possession of drug paraphernalia when he was arrested. Rinfret said the grandparents have asked for leniency and did not request restitution for the stolen money. Jarvis’s attorney, Thomas White, said Jarvis stole because of a drug problem. “We have a drug problem that was intensifying,” White said. “He was maintaining his drug abuse by stealing from his grandparents.” Jarvis said he has done a lot of thinking sitting in jail since his arrest. “I realize a lot of the problems I have have to do with drugs,”Jarvis said. “I feel a lot better now that I’ve spent that time in jail and I’ve been sober for the first time in a long time.” Rinfret said he will review Jarvis’ case in one month and consider transferring him to residential treatment. Rinfret said Jarvis will pay back the money he stole in spite of his grandparent’s wishes. “I’m going to do what I think is best for your victim,” Rinfret said. “I have to protect them (even though) they don’t want me to do anything to you.”
