SUMMARY: West Holmes high school principal Bill Sterling to start as superintendent Aug. 1. Killbuck principal Aaron Kaufman is slated to fill the high school principal position.
A high school principal was hired Monday June 23 as the new superintendent of the West Holmes School District.
The West Holmes School Board hired West Holmes High School principal Bill Sterling on a three year contract for the top administrative position in the district. Sterling will begin serving as superintendent Aug. 1.
The board decision brought the search for a new superintendent to a speedy conclusion, following the resignation of former Superintendent Kris Perone June 16.
Sterling, speaking Tuesday, said a one year contract was discussed with the board. Sterling said he is comfortable with the three year contract, having been in the district as principal at the high school for seven years.
Its nice that Ive been in the district, Sterling said. A lot of the things I learned, I learned from Kris, so that will make the transition easier.
Sterling and the board will have to move fast to fill vacancies. Curriculum and federal programs director Lori Robson and cafeteria supervisor Dixie Gray submitted their resignations the same day as Perone. With Sterling moving into the superintendent position, a new high school principal will need to be approved.
Boardmember Tina Zickefoose said the regular monthly meeting for July of the West Holmes school board will be moved forward to July 8, when it is expected that Sterling will make recommendations as to staffing.
Sterling said he has a slate of candidates ready: Killbuck principal Aaron Kaufman for the high school principals job and Renee Woods, Clark Elementary principal, for the curriculum and federal programs director. The cafeteria supervisor position will be advertised, Sterling said.
Sterling said he expects to spend much of his time meeting new challenges to the district that are coming from the state level, while continuing to provide a good education for the students of the district.
Sterling completed his superintendents certification four years ago.
Zickefoose said the board was glad to find a new superintendent in house.
We need stabilization and Bill is willing to provide that for us, Zickefoose said.
