Summary: There is an interesting race going on between former Ohio 6th Congressional District Representative Charlie Wilson and incumbent Bill Johnson. Wilson lost to Johnson two years ago after serving two years, but is now trying to reclaim his representative seat. Charlie Wilson (D) is a candidate for Ohio’s 6th Congressional District representative. Wilson attended Ohio State University and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, and established his career in the funeral home business. In 1996, he began the first of five terms in the Ohio Congress. Wilson ran for Ohio’s 6th district and won two terms, but was defeated by current incumbent Bill Johnson in 2010. “I oppose the tax breaks for companies that are outsourcing jobs overseas,” stated Wilson at the Tues, Oct. 9 Meet the Candidates forum at Kent State Tuscarawas. “Jobs and Medicare are the two big issues that differentiate myself and my opponent.” Wilson emphasized the high costs of medical care for seniors. “Our senior cannot afford to have a voucher system for Medicare. Pharmaceuticals (costs) are a big waste of taxpayer money.” Wilson’s endorsements include the National Education Association, American Federation of Government Employees, the AFSCME and numerous other labor and trade organizations. Incumbent Bill Johnson (R) was not present for Tuesday night’s event. Johnson is a graduate of Troy University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and is a 26 year United States Air Force veteran. He has been serving in the United States House of Representatives since 2010, and currently serves on the Veterans’ Affairs, Foreign Affairs, and Natural Resources Committees, and is chair of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations for Veterans’ Affairs. Johnson recently voted yes on HR 3409 Stop the War on Coal Act of 2012. Johnson opposes the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as well as opposes the legalization of gay marriage on the grounds that “It undermines the integrity of the American family.” He is endorsed by the National Rifle Association, the Ohio Right to Life PAC, Move America Forward Freedom PAC, the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge, and others.
