7/19/11 Wooster men charged in copper wire thefts

                        
SUMMARY: Hit three Millersburg businesses, took wire, car parts Alleged scrap thieves who hit three Millersburg businesses were indicted on breaking and entering charges by the grand jury. Michael B. Daugherty, 26, 505 West Larwill Street, Lot 53, Wooster, Rodney R. Roper, 35, 505 West Larwill Street, Lot 31, Wooster and Steven R. Roper, 28, 1855 Mechanicsburg Road, Lot L3, Wooster, are each charged with three counts of breaking and entering, fifth-degree felonies. They each face up to 36 months in prison if convicted. The charges stem from June 18, when the three codefendants allegedly stole copper wire, radiators and miscellaneous car parts from two electric service companies and a trucking company. According to Holmes County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Nathan Fritz, the thefts were detected by a deputy patrolling the area of state Route 39 outside of Millersburg at approximately 12 a.m. Fritz said the deputy observed a Chevy van parked off County Road 400 on an access road and saw two male subjects walking in the roadway. The deputy checked a nearby trailer owned by an electric company that was working on a job at a power station and found the trailer had been forcibly entered. The deputy returned to the van and made a traffic stop. The stolen items were recovered from the van. Daugherty and Rodney Roper were arrested following the traffic stop. Millersburg Police followed up investigation at a South Washington business and a trucking company. According to Millersburg Detective Sgt. Roger Estill, the electric company reported stolen wire and the trucking company said a radiator and car parts were stolen. Daugherty and Rodney Roper are scheduled for arraignment Thursday July 21. Steven Roper has not been served with charges.
