A purse for every personality

                        
It started with a diaper bag. Mary Ann Smucker was looking for the right bag to use with her baby. Small and simple was what she wanted, just big enough to carry a few essentials. When she couldn’t find what she wanted, the solution seemed obvious. Mary Ann enjoyed sewing clothes for her family, why not a diaper bag? So she created her own perfect bag. The right size, the right pockets, the right handle, and of course, the right color. A funny thing happened with her diaper bag. Her friends liked it, so she made a few more, and quickly realized she had discovered a market. Not just for diaper bags, but for purses and bags of all sorts, with a practical design, quality fabrics, made to last. Mary Ann and her daughters sold a few on Ebay and at craft shows before opening a retail store. Two moves later, Homespun at Heart is selling handmade handbags in the heart of downtown Berlin, with her daughters right inside the front window, crafting purses while customers watch. But it didn’t really start with a diaper bag. It started with a vision. When John and Mary Ann Smucker moved their young family to Holmes County in 1999, they had a vision of a business that would involve the whole family, which now numbers eight children.
