Every home is as unique as the people that live there. At Alpine Cabinets of Holmes County, customers can find custom-designed cabinetry and storage solutions that meet their needs all while adding beauty and value to their home. Alpine Cabinets serves residential contractors and homeowners in every stage of the life of a home. Whether it is custom cabinetry for a new home, meticulously crafted cabinets from a specific era for a historical renovation or a remodel of an existing space, Alpine Cabinets guides customers through the cabinet selection process from design to installation. “Consumers are much more educated nowadays,” said Eli Wengerd, Alpine Cabinets owner. “Customers know what they want and we encourage them to bring in pictures or sketches so we can help them design the cabinets that will work well for them. Even rough sketches help us to understand how we can provide the best products for each customer.” Customers seeking handcrafted, all-wood cabinets have a limited selection in today’s market of big box stores that lack in quality as well as service. Many of the cabinets on the market today use particleboard with a wood-grained vinyl covering or a low grade of plywood and vinyl coatings that looks try to look like wood. At Alpine Cabinets, customers can have elegant, high-quality handcrafted cabinetry made to fit the home, decor and lifestyle exactly the way they want, without sacrificing the comfort and functionality they demand. Alpine Cabinets use no particleboard in the construction of their cabinetry. Wood’s natural appeal and adaptability to a wide variety of finishes and styles makes it the preferred choice of the vast majority of homeowners. Customers can choose from a variety of wood species that include brown maple, a straight-grained wood that resists abrasion and indentation, ash, with a moderately open and pronounced grain and maple, a favorite of furniture makers since colonial days. Oak, alder, quarter-sawn white oak, birch, hickory and cherry are available as well with a myriad of finishes to compliment any home. Alpine Cabinets are available in a variety of stains that range from light to dark and from opaque to nearly transparent. The staining process involves applying the stain uniformly to the wood surface and wiping off the excess so that the desired color saturation is achieved. Different woods stain differently and Alpine Cabinets can explain why the overall color and shade is a result of a combination of the stain and properties of the wood. Some customers prefer the look of painted cabinets while others prefer special finishes that give their home a distinctive look like the rustic nature of distressed cabinetry. Distressing consists of adding imperfections to cabinet doors, in addition to or combining with other finishes, to give wood cabinets an aged, distressed, rustic appearance. Common distressing techniques include adding wormholes, rasping, dings and dents, crackling and sanding through the layers of finish and wood unevenly. Expert Amish cabinetmakers from the region use time-tested traditional methods of construction like dovetail joinery. American made materials, many sourced locally allow for soft-close doors and drawers and hidden under mount slides. “Customers appreciate that our products are made locally and that we use hardware that is made in America,” said Wengerd. “They notice the difference in quality and are realizing the importance of buying American made products.” Cabinetry while customarily thought of as a permanent fixture in the kitchen, extends to other rooms in the home as well. Alpine Cabinets provides customers with an endless selection of cabinetry for the bathroom as well as the home office. Fireplace mantels and surrounds, entertainment centers, libraries and bookcases are constructed with the same high-quality materials and attention to detail. “We get some unusual requests,” said Wengerd. “We have made a kitchen island that looks like a grand piano and we made an entertainment center with a box stall door.” Alpine Cabinets introduced their showroom, powered exclusively by solar panels, in historic downtown Winesburg in April. The restored 1880’s era log home serves as a venue to display the fine products made by the skilled artisans at the shop just down the road. The second story boasts two private rooms where guests can spend the night in the quaint neighborhood. A self-described jack-of-all-trades, Wengerd now adds innkeeper to his list of skills. “When we first bought the property we did not know the house was a log home,” said Wengerd. “It is amazing how many people come through this small town and we are happy to be a part of this community. Our customers can get a real sense of how our cabinets will look when they see them in the restored log home.” Alpine Cabinets, since 1987 has always strived to provide fine craftsmanship, honest and efficient service and remains committed to sustainable practices. Products can be shipped nationwide and to Canada as well. “One of our customers was so pleased with our cabinets she now serves as a distributor in the Washington, D.C. area,” said Wengerd. Locally, Alpine Cabinets can be found at 2100 U.S. 62 and by phone at 330-359-5724.
