Annual Kid's Day provides fun for families at the Holmes County Fair
Story: The fair is always a popular destination for children of all ages to see the animals, ride the rides, chow down on a corn dog and sip a lemonade. From noon to 4 p.m. on August 10, children had even more reason to venture out the fair for Kid's Day, when special ride prices, vendor discounts and giveaways and free fun activities in the 4H buildings were provided for young fairgoers.
The 4H buildings were teeming with children of all ages meandering from booth to booth. The kids could participate in everything from hula-hoop games at the First Merit Bank booth to a bird beak and animal track identification game at the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalists booth. One of the most popular booths was the booth provided by Rodhe's IGA Marketplace. Here, children could build pasta necklaces from brightly colored noodles.
These booths were educational for the children as well as entertaining. Paula Aurand and Carol Remington helped at the Connecting Money & Science booth for the Killbuck Savings Bank. At their booth, the children made their own savings-oriented optical illusion by drawing pictures of a pig and a coin on opposite sides of a piece of paper and spinning it by its strings, making it appear like the coin was in a piggy bank. "We're helping the kids learn about money and having fun at the fair," said Aurand.
Sarah Sprang, a 4H member who shows animals at the fair, said that making pasta necklaces was her favorite activity so far, but she planned on seeing what else the Kid's Day had to offer. "I was planning on coming to this," she said. "We'll go to the rides after we do all the activities."
Many children had the same plan as the lines grew for the swings, the spinning barrels and the popular carousel. Jenny Wengerd, who brings her two kids to the fair on this special day for the reduced rates and fun activities, said her children always enjoy Kid's Day. "This day for sure we always come because of the kids," she said. "They already got necklaces, tattoos and got to find little animals."
More activities could be found in other areas of the fair. In the commercial area, A Touch of Art offered a face painting deal, The Millersburg Christian Church offered games and prizes and children could get a free cowboy hat at Triple "R" Stables if they purchased a pony ride and picture. In front of the CSB Stage, the Center of Science and Industry offered a science-centered exhibit where kids could simultaneously play and learn.
The fun even continued into the evening when Magician Bobby Maverick performed on the CSB Stage.
All that fun could not be enjoyed on an empty stomach. Luckily, vendors who flew balloons from their stalls offered discounts and giveaways to kids. Children could polish off two doughnuts for $1 or get a free ice cream sandwich at the Holmes County Dairy Boosters. Other food stands and businesses offered discounted treats for children wishing to dig into a stromboli or an elephant ear.
The many free activities, reduced rates and reduced food prices made Kid's Day an ideal opportunity for families to have an affordable and fun-filled day at the fair.
