Are you a spiritual double dipper?

Summary: Are you a spiritual double dipper? Read on to find out what Amber is talking about. I used to double dip a lot. Yes, I know this is an awful habit but honestly I didn’t know any better. No one had ever told me the truth that I shouldn’t do it. Since I have learned how wrong it is, I want to teach you all as well because I know that the vast majority of Christians reading this are double dippers as well. Spiritual double dippers, that is. What is this crazy woman talking about? Glad you asked. I am talking about dipping into Jesus (grace), and then dipping back into our works (law). Looking back, I was the chief of the double dippers. I knew that I needed Jesus to get to Heaven (dipping into grace), but then after that I thought my right standing with God was dependent upon me (dipping back into the law). My relationship with God had to do with a little bit of what Jesus had done, but A LOT of what I had to do. Little dip into Jesus, BIG dip into my works. The people of Galatia were big time spiritual double dippers as well. They received Jesus, then fell for lies that they needed to go back under the law to be righteous. Hmm, sound familiar? Galatians 3:3 says, “Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?” Paul, through inspiration of the Holy Spirit, is addressing this issue of spiritually double dipping. Basically, Paul is telling them, “Why are you thinking you need to add to what Jesus has already done? You can’t add to it, and there is no way you can earn your righteousness. Your righteousness is not dependent upon you but dependent upon Jesus! Stop double dipping and dip only into Jesus!” Galatians 2:16 reads: “knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.” Faith in Jesus is what justifies us! Abraham lived before the law was even given. Do you know what made him righteous in God’s eyes? Was it all his mighty works? No. Galatians 3:6 says, “just as Abraham ‘believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.’” His belief is what made him righteous, just like our belief (faith) in Jesus is what makes us righteous. 2 Corinthians 5:21 has become one of my favorite verses. It reads: “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” When I truly got revelation of this verse, it blew me away. I remember thinking, “You mean Jesus not only took ALL my sins, but also GAVE me His righteousness? And now I am righteous in God’s eyes because I have faith in Jesus and not because of my works? How can this be? Why haven’t I heard this before?” And the more I read my Bible, the more I saw scripture after scripture after scripture confirming this truth. The stress and burden I felt from having to earn my righteousness through my actions faded away and an overwhelming sense of love, peace, joy, and gratitude flooded my soul. Now I can just rest in Jesus. I don’t have to look at myself and all that I have to do, I just rest in the work that He has done for me. It has taken a lot of renewing of my mind to this truth and filtering out of the old garbage. I tell myself that I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, fully knowing that truth isn’t because of anything I have done but because of everything He has done for me. Since I know this truth, I have such a passion to serve my awesome Savior with every ounce of my entire being and tell others about this good news as well. To all you spiritual double dippers out there, I want to end this with a final word of scripture from Galatians 5:1: “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” Don’t allow yourself to get back under the bondage of the law by focusing on yourself and your works. I encourage you to live free in this freedom Jesus died for you to have by keeping your eyes on Him and His righteousness. Stop the double dipping and dip only into Jesus! (Questions or comments?
