Summary: Artists flock to Wineburg for the 4th annual Classic Art Show. Story: Many people have an acute case of retrophilia. Put simply, they love history and hold dear the narratives, antiques and places that tell the story of the past. For all the retrophilias out there, a day of art, automobiles and antiques awaits on Saturday, August 20 when the fourth annual Winesburg Classic Art Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in historic Winesburg, Ohio. The pairing of art and history is obvious in this unique show that showcases both modern art and antique treasures. Artists team up with the Winesburg Historical Society, an organization that has preserved the village’s charming heritage. “We have an art show that is unusual from everyone else,” said Glenn Wengerd, president of the Winesburg Historical Society. “We have every kind of art, not only on canvas.” In addition to traditional canvas painting, the show features woodworking, watercolors, pottery, acrylics, photography, fabric art, metal sculpture, artisan jewelry and music. Nelson Roller and the Porch Pickers and Glen Parks, a performer from Springfield, Ohio, will entertain with bluegrass music and riffs from the banjo. The Winesburg Historical Society is proud to have a different kind of artwork on display. Tours of the town’s Victorian homes, including Wengerd’s home The House Next Door, will reveal the delicate architectural details of carvings, moldings and woodwork inside the old homes. The Historical Society Museum will offer visitors the chance to step into Winesburg’s rich history. Locally owned and renovated classic cars and antique tractors will be displayed on Main Street and 24 restored vintage bicycles from the ‘40s to early ‘60s will set up shop in the Antique Mall as part of a fledgling bicycle swap meet. This diverse show underscores Winesburg’s intriguing quality of old world rusticity existing side-by-side with modernity. “Winesburg is such a charming venue to hold the show with its brick sidewalks and tree lined streets,” said Cheryl Miller, the show’s committee leader. In this town at the edge of Holmes County, horse-drawn buggies and semis share the streets. In Winesburg, the nostalgic setting is as beautiful as the art it displays. Even amid such topographical beauty, the artwork shines. About 20 artists showed their work last year, including some local artists. “I think we have a nice variety of high quality art,” said Miller. Participating artists will have the chance to win prizes. Judges will be awarding cash prizes to first place, second place, third place and honorable mention finishers. This show stands out because of its vast variety of artwork and displays. “All of the different units come together and make a nice show,” explained Wengerd. “There is something of interest for everyone.” Whether a visitor finds beauty in an artfully restored antique automobile, in the intricacies of an exposed tractor engine, in the slope of a Victorian roof or in a painting of the local landscape, the Winesburg Classic Art Show promises to offer a little bit of everything, especially for the retrophilias in attendance.
