As the Wayne Center for the Arts celebrates its 40th Anniversary, it guarantees an additional 40 years by continually refining programs, developing new classes, and creating new events. Such is the case with the upcoming inaugural Wayne/Holmes Pottery Exhibition. Arts Center Pottery Coordinator Matt Menuez explained, “The (Spring) Functional Ceramics Show brings in artists from all over the country and sometimes Canada, but we’ve never done a show just on local potters. So Robb (Hyde, Executive Director) and I thought it would be great to showcase potters from Wayne and Holmes Counties.” The debut of the exhibition will start with a reception in the Roberta Looney Gallery at the WCA on October 24th from 6 – 8 pm, and the curated show will be open from October 24 – November 16, overlapping with the Watercolor Guild Exhibition which also showcases local artists in the Gault Gallery until November 2. Menuez noted, “We have a really strong group of potters between Wayne and Holmes Counties and there’s a number of up and coming ceramic artists.” With many area dabblers in clay belonging to the Wooster Potters Guild, Menuez felt that word of mouth alone should bring in enough entries to the first show to provide a nice representation of this craft. “The public may not realize how much there is in this area”, continued Menuez. Although he was quick to note, the popularity of the annual Potters Guild Holiday Sale when potential buys are lined up before the doors open. Long-time member of the Potters Guild, Nancy Webb, guessed that the group has been together for at least 33 years. Besides Webb and Menuez, other notable potters including Carli Morefield, Carol Ohl, Jim Spires, Katie Fox, and Pat Thomson will display their earthenware, and with the deadline for the “Intent to Participate Form” approaching, Menuez looked forward to reviewing additional applications. Individual artists may choose to have some of their displayed items available for sale, thus serving as a nice “lead in to the pottery sale later in November” according to Menuez. Other upcoming events sponsored by The Wayne Center for the Arts include the Wooster Camera Club Exhibition, November 7 – December 14; the 40th Anniversary Gala Dinner, November 8; Wooster Potters Guild Holiday Sale, November 22 and 23; and the Childrens Chorus Holiday Concert, December 8.
