Summary: Is there a clear winner in the wave of Old Fashionedness that has swept over Tuscarawas County? Read on as Teri Stein takes on this timely question. Recently we in Tuscarawas County have been hit with a wave of Old Fashionedness. (No, it’s not a really a word.) The first level of Old Fashionedness was the movie version. You have to have been living under a rock to not have known about the movie that was shot here. “Old Fashioned” the movie brought many good things to our county. First, a sense of pride that our area was a top pick for being a great area to film in. More pride as area residents pulled together to help make up for what the “Old Fashioned” budget was short on, whether it be locations or extras. Though a slim budget, that money was spent in our county and when the movie is released to a larger audience, tourism will increase as fans of the story flock to the area to see our scenic county for themselves. Oh, and – “Old Fashioned” the movie offered us locals a chance to see our two favorite leading men, Rik Swartzwelder, the former New Philadelphia resident who also directed the film, and Joe Bonamico, of Trumpet in the Land and The White Savage, on the BIG screen! Oh, and – the Performing Arts Center at Kent State Tuscarawas kicked off “Old Fashioned” the movie with a grand gala event that we could all be proud of – with proceeds from the gala going to provide an endowment fund for the PAC. The following night, a sneak peek open to the public was a complete success with proceeds going to create a new arts scholarship at Kent State Tuscarawas. Oh, and – what was that other thing? Oh yeah, “Old Fashioned the WINTER,” like the kind of winters we had when I was a child. It provided its own brand of excitement. It’s exciting when you lose traction and spin your car into the guard rail like one of my nephews did. Yup, so exciting! It’s really exciting when you get the bill for that damage. My husband, Joe, and I thought it was really exciting when we nearly missed hitting a bicyclist going the wrong way in traffic as she slipped and slid around the roadway. So thrilling! And with the snow piled along the berm of the road there was nowhere for anyone to go to get out of another driver or biker’s way. I thought it was really exciting when crawling along in my car one day on my way home from work on the snow covered state highway I observed some poor motorists still in their car after apparently spinning out and off the road. (Let us pause here as you add your own exciting “Old Fashioned the Winter” story.) We had the time of our lives tag team shoveling the drive way. The snow, the freezing rain, the artic temperatures, the floods, the icy sidewalks and roadways, the wondering if you would make it through the winter without breaking a bone, all so exciting! The Polar Vortex are two words I’d rather not hear again – ever! And while I hope that down the road “Old Fashioned” the movie gets a sequel, I pray that “Old Fashioned the Winter” does not! So let’s take a poll. Raise your hand for your choice. Let’s see; count, count, count. And the results are: “Old Fashioned” the movie – YES! “Old Fashioned the Winter” – NO!
