In her 48th year in Boy Scouting, there isn’t a post Jo Anne Page hasn’t held, an activity she hasn’t been involved in and now, an award she hasn’t won. And that includes Killbuck District Scouter of the Year, which Page took home after the district’s recent recognition dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Wooster. But do not be mistaken, Page isn’t done yet. “I wish I could learn more,” she said, “I hope I have time to learn more.” The Scouter of the Year Award is sponsored by the Commercial & Savings Bank and is selected by a district committee. In accepting the award, Page spoke with pride about her own children, all of whom were involved in either Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts. Her youngest son, Jonathan, is an Eagle Scout and attended the Feb. 20 banquet along with his wife, Janice, and Page’s husband, Jon. Two other children, Holly and James, are deceased. “You just don’t know how blessed I am to be here,” Page said. “And how happy I am to be here.” Her mother, Page said, always encouraged her to be a giver and not a taker, and between Scouting and her church, she said, “I have learned what it meant to accept all people.” Page thanked her pastor, Matthew Wald of Church of the Cross United Methodist, who attended the banquet, for being her “pastor, friend and mentor.” Her love for children has extended not only to scouting and to church, but through her involvement in a number of parent organizations as well. But, she said, with Scouting, “we make sure every boy knows he is important, that he counts, that he matters.” Page, who is affiliated with Troop 68 in Wooster, previously has received Scouting’s Ray Ziegman Award, the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award. She also has received the district’s Wreath of Service and is a Wood Badge recipient. Other Scouters receiving awards at the banquet included: Denise Saari, the Killbuck Award; John Zeek, the Ray Ziegman Award; Paul Moodispaw, Silver Beaver; Ron Gilbert, Wreath of Service; Sally Turpin, Distinguished Commissioner Award; Turpin and Lauren Playl, Commissioner Key; Denver Stufflebeam, Award of Merit; and Nate Ellett, Akela Award. Jerry Frye was honored with the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award by the district and by Ebenezer Lodge #33 Free and Accepted Masons. Top popcorn sellers for 2013 were awarded to Pack 61, which averaged $325 in sales per scout; and Troop 358, which averaged $472.50 per scout. In the past year, 22 boys earned the Eagle Scout honor: Bradley Bailey, Josiah Beeman, Ryan Chabak, Cody Daughtery, Nicholas Dulaney, Trey Eikleberry, Alexander Hasapis; Aaron Hughes, Alex Kirkpatrick, Benjamin Lorentz, Kenneth Mangle, Nathan McCollum, Devin Mosier, Alex Nguyen, Benjamin Nolt, Ezekiel Rhamy, Evan Smith, Ian Stermer, Andrew Teece, Aaron Uhler, John Walentik, Ian Zaleski. In addition, McCollum’s project was named Eagle Project of the Year by the Buckeye Council, and Mangle’s was named runner up.
