Two Wayne County Schools Career Center Medical Office Management students have qualified for Business Professionals of America national skill competitions in April, having placed first in the Ohio competition in Columbus. Mariah Beery of Smithville won first place in advanced office systems and procedures. She is the daughter of Dwaine and Shelly Beery of Smithville. Beery serves as class treasurer, and last year won both first place in state and in the nation in BPA basic office systems and procedures contest. Martha Jenkins of Norwayne won first place in medical office procedures. She is the daughter of Tom and Debra Jenkins of Creston. Jenkins serves as historian for the BPA chapter. The BPA National Leadership Conference will be in Indianapolis, Ind. April 30 through May 4. This year’s theme is “Accelerate Your Future.” More than 5,000 students from around the nation will compete in skill competitions, workshops, general sessions, and see the sights in Indianapolis. Other students placing in the top 10 at state were: Jina Eash of Orrville, basic office systems and procedures, sixth. Randy McCrea of Norwayne, digital publishing with InDesign, eighth. Trinda Hartzler of Norwayne, fundamental desktop publishing, eighth. Micaela Smith of Chippewa, advanced office systems and procedures, ninth. Video production team of Cody Bennett, Wooster; Brittany Phipps, Chippewa; Gage Bartley, Wooster; ninth. BPA advisors are Medical Office Management instructor Anita Hawkins, and Interactive Media instructor Jennifer Rue. BPA is a national organization for middle school, high school, and college students preparing for careers in business and information technology. The organization’s activities and programs complement classroom instruction by giving students practical experience through application of the skills learned at school. BPA acts as a cohesive agent in the nationwide networking of education, business and industry. BPA is contributing to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic and technological skills.
