Summary: Moviemakers have found a filming location in Sugarcreek, Ohio, and they're looking for locals to serve as extras. If you live in Holmes, Tuscarawas or Stark county, you could be just the person they need. Will Hollywood find you in Sugarcreek, Ohio? If you're right for the part, it just might. An open casting call for extras in a movie to be filmed this month in Sugarcreek will take place from 11 a.m.-4 pm. on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Welcome Center of the Tuscarawas County Convention and Visitor's Bureau in New Philadelphia. The made for TV romantic drama, Love Finds You in Sugarcreek, Ohio, based on a book of the same name by southern Ohio writer Serena Miller, will be shot in its entirety in Sugarcreek. Produced by Mission Pictures International, the film will star Kelly McGillis (Top Gun, Witness), Sarah Lancaster (Chuck, Scrubs), and Tom Everett Scott (That Thing You Do). A large portion of the filming will be done during the Swiss Festival, according to Sugarcreek Marketing Administrator Rachel Rothacher. "We are very excited and things are moving along well," Rothacher said. "The crew wanted to be here for the actual festival, which is central to the story. They didn't want to fake it. It was important to them that it be authentic." In the book, one of the characters participates in the steintossen competition, which involves throwing huge stone shot-put style. "Competitors all have their own unique technique," Rothacher said. "The film company wanted to recreate that experience as closely to reality as possible." The movie, like the book, will follow policewoman Rachel Troyer, played by Lancaster, who is trying to convince her aging Amish aunts (including Kelly McGillis) to retire from running the Sugar Haus, a local inn that's popular with tourists. Then Joe (Scott) shows up, out of money and out of luck, a young son in-tow, and Rachel's aunts invite him to stay. Joe doesn't volunteer any information about his past, so Rachel launches into policewoman mode to find out the facts, uncovering more than she bargained for. Originally, Rothacher said, the company was going to film only the establishing outdoor shots in the decidedly Swiss Tuscarawas County town, but after getting to know the area and seeing for themselves the homes and hillsides Miller so thoroughly researched for her book, they decided to shoot the entire film on location. "We're a pretty accessible place, for being a small village," Rothacher said. "Plus, we're eager to help provide the extras and the locations needed to make this project successful. Everyone involved has been very cooperative, from the police and fire departments to the mayor and council." Village officials are excited to have this opportunity to turn the public's eye to the distinctive town and its growth. "There are a lot of new things happening here," Rothacher said, "and this will give people a chance to see how wonderful our village really is." Several hundred extras, ages 18 and older, will be needed on various days between Sept. 16 and Oct. 5. Those wishing to be considered should attend the Sept. 14 casting call with a recent headshot or snapshot of themselves. Only residents of Holmes, Tuscarawas and Stark counties are eligible for consideration. Contact Lillian Pyles Casting at 216-321-8439 for more details.
