Summary: The Village of Baltic will offer fun fall festivities for the whole family on Saturday, Oct. 22. Story: Kick off fall in a whole new way with seasonal food, festivities and attractions at the first ever Baltic Harvest Festival. For fun for the whole family, come out to Baltic, Ohio on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 12-6 p.m. The Baltic Harvest Festival is presented by the Baltic Businessman’s Association and includes games and contests, hayrides, tours, music and seasonal food stands allover the downtown Baltic area. “This is a new festival,” said Nancy Griffith, from Baltic City Hall. “We’ve got a really nice day planned and we’ll get something great out of it if people come.” The festival will showcase the businesses and activities available in the Village of Baltic, with most of the festival’s activities occurring on the village porches, parks, doorsteps and yards. Not only will there be fall festivities for everyone to enjoy, there will be opportunities to visit the local parks, museums and businesses throughout the downtown Baltic area. “Our business community is trying to reorganize with this October harvest fest. We’ve kind of been in the doldrums for a few years and we really need a boost,” Griffith explained. “We’ve got some new business owners who are enthusiastic about getting it started. If we can get people on the bandwagon we’ll have a really good time.” And a really good time is certainly in store for those who attend this festival. From contests to caramel apples, there is something for everyone at this celebration. At noon, a cornhole tournament will kickoff in which competitors can compete against fellow players from allover the area to see who is the best beanbag thrower around. Be sure to bring plenty of creativity and a parent, for the popular pumpkin carving contest will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the Baltic park pavilion, where pumpkin and safety carving utensils will be provided for participants. Get there early, though; the contest is only open to the first 75 contestants. Whether the artists decide to carve a fearsome or friendly pumpkin, all the finished pumpkins will be judged and the winners announced. For a seasonal take on the traditional pie eating contests, the 1st Annual Pumpkin Pie Eating Contest will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the park for the first 12 contestants who wish to devour the pie of the season in record time and vie for the title of Pumpkin Pie Eating Champion. Other activities will be available all day. Hayrides will travel along a path from Baltic Country Meats to downtown Baltic. Children can have their faces painted in Halloween splendor in front of Gerber & Sons retail store. Visitors can also learn get a lesson in the history of the town, as The Baltic Historical Society will be at the historic log cabin on SR 93, and the museum, located in the basement of Baltic State Bank, will be open. Attendees can also spend the afternoon on the porch of Baltic Mills store listening to great music. Debbie Kaiser, an artist originally from Baltic, will be returning to town with Bobby Russell and Donnie Evans from New Concord, followed by the Countryside Church Choir. Participating in all these fun-filled activities will no doubt work up an appetite. If so, the Baltic Harvest Festival is just the place to be for sweet and savory seasonal offerings. Food stands will be serving up the best fall fare with homemade caramel kettle corn, hot apple cider and pumpkin pie. Baltic Country meats will be dishing out pulled pork sandwiches and homemade caramel apples, while grilled hotdogs will be available at the Baltic Bar and Grill. Additionally, the Baltic Bar and Grill and Miller’s Dutch Kitch’n will be serving full menus all day. If this festival is successful, the village plans on offering similar events throughout the year, starting at Christmas. “We’d like to go back to the old style,” said Griffith. “Maybe do these events four times a year, like we used to.” For a village celebration, with a look to Baltic’s past and a nod to its future, come out to the fun-filled Baltic Harvest Festival for the best of fall’s bountiful harvest.
