The Wayne County Civil War Roundtable, in collaboration with the Wayne Co. Libraries, will host the program in the Wooster Library Conference Room. We are now in the final months of the third year of that horrible war. We will be showing one of Ken Burns outstanding film series of the Civil War entitled “Valley of the Shadow of Death” which covers the first months of 1864 (150 years ago). This episode begins with a biographical comparison of the Generals (Grant and Lee) and then chronicles the extraordinary series of battles that pitted the two generals against each other. It covers the battles from Wilderness to Petersburg, VA. In those thirty days the two armies lose more men than both sides have lost in three years of war! With Grant and Lee deadlocked at Petersburg, we visit the ghastly hospitals (North and South) and follow Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign through the mountains of northern Georgia. As the horrendous casualty lists increase, Lincoln’s chances for re-election begin to dim, and with them the possibility of a Union victory. We can certainly appreciate Ken Burn’s superbly done Civil War Series much more now than when they came out over 20 years ago!
