COW art exhibit

The College of Wooster Art Museum (CWAM) will present “The Performative in African Art,” an exhibition curated by students in Kara Morrow’s African Art class, through Dec. 6 in Ebert Art Center, 1220 Beall Ave. The exhibition, which is associated with this year’s Wooster Forum (titled “Facing RACE”), features more than 25 objects from the Art Museum’s Permanent Collection. The objects fall into one of four conceptual categories — ancestral, funerary, initiatory, and leadership — and represent such groups as the Yoruba (Nigeria), Asante (Ghana), Baga (Guinea), Bamana (Mali), and Ndebele (South Africa). “The show provides a context for the production, use, and meaning of art and African culture,” said Morrow. “It gives our students a wonderful opportunity to explore and interact with objects in a capacity that echoes the work of a gallery curator or museum professional. It also helps them build valuable skills in the areas of observation and critical thinking.” In addition, the students will have an opportunity to cultivate their presentation and public speaking skills when they talk about their objects at the opening reception on Thursday, Nov. 14. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the gallery talks scheduled for 7 p.m. The students will also discuss their experiences with the alumni board that weekend. Participating in the exhibition are seniors Olivia Gregory, an anthropology/sociology major, Rebecca Roper, a history major, and Brendon Taylor, a philosophy major; juniors Jennifer Caventer, an anthropology and art history double major, Nora Yawitz, a theatre major, and Philip Chung, Chloe McFadyen, and James Parker, all art history majors; and sophomores Jennifer Filak, a psychology major, Katelyn Schoenike, an archaeology major, Sarah Van Oss, an art history and archaeology double major, and Maki Love and Shanteal Weldon, both Africana Studies majors. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, can be viewed Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. For more information, call 330-263-2495 or visit wooster.edu/cwam.
