Saakumu Dance Troupe, a traditional African drumming and dancing group from Ghana, will visit The College of Wooster later this month to present a free workshop and concert. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m., and the performance will be held on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 7:30 p.m. Both events will be held in Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center (525 E. University St.). Saakumu Dance Troupe is one of the leading traditional/contemporary dance and music groups in Ghana. Led by master musician, Bernard Woma, the group’s repertoire ranges from spiritual, ceremonial, and recreational genres to contemporary African dance forms. The music and dance is described as “joyful, expressive, and highly participatory.” Instrumentation includes African xylophone, drums, and calabash water drums, along with the praise singing of the Akan and Dagbamba people of Ghana. The Troupe has performed at government functions and national and international music and dance festivals throughout West Africa. It is the official performing group at this year’s National Festival of Art and Culture (NAFAC), the largest cultural festival in Ghana. Saakumu’s visit is sponsored by Wooster’s Center for Diversity and Global Engagement, the Cultural Events Committee, the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs, the Department of Music, and the Department of Theatre and Dance.
